Fantasy Baseball Sleepers 2012: Pitchers to Wait for on Draft Day

Eric BowmanMar 29, 2012

In fantasy baseball, pitchers aren't going to make or break your team, so sitting back and waiting to draft some is a very smart option.

Sure, having quality pitchers is important, but the beginning of your draft needs to be focused on landing those hitters that will push you towards the top.

Major League Baseball is loaded with superb pitchers, so there are plenty of opportunities to draft great guys that will help you win your league.

That being said, here are three pitchers to wait on come draft day:

Edinson Volquez, SP, San Diego Padres

Volquez leaves a hitters' park and is about to embark on a new chapter in a wonderful pitchers' park. Petco Park is one of the best places for pitchers, and Volquez is going to thrive in his new home.

He's being drafted around the 20th round in most leagues, and that is a great steal for fantasy players.

It's a bit of risk given his past problems with his command, but because Volquez has the ability to strike out a lot of batters, you're going to want him on your team.

Phil Hughes, SP, New York Yankees

Like Volquez, Hughes is being drafted around the 20th round, but when it's all said and done, his production will be much better than expected.

He struggled last year, but look for him to bounce back and surge in 2012. So far he's having a strong spring, which is great news for the rest of this season.

Hughes will be heavily relied upon by the Yankees this year, and if moved to the bullpen, he'll still be able to perform well for his team and his fantasy owners.

Mike Minor, SP, Atlanta Braves

The Braves have a phenomenal pitching rotation, and Minor is a guy that's taken a backseat to guys like Jair Jurrjens, Tommy Hanson and Tim Hudson.

However, that doesn't mean he isn't going to be good. In fact, since the Braves have such great arms, it should inspire Minor to be a top-notch guy as well.

Minor will be a great addition to any fantasy owner's rotation, even if just used strictly for matchups. He's being taken around the 18th round or so, but his stats in 2012 will be very good.
