WWE Diva Diagnosis: Is WWE Finally Pushing the Right Diva in AJ?

Drake OzMar 28, 2012

The WWE is getting it wrong with the Divas team match at WrestleMania 28 that will probably be borderline unwatchable.

But one thing it is getting right? The push of Smackdown Diva AJ.

The creative team has been searching for a top baby face Diva for what seems like forever now, giving Kelly Kelly, Eve and Tamina Smuka chances to become the next face of the Divas division. But the pushes of all three women faded into oblivion, and now, the company needs a new face to push.

I think they’ve found that in AJ.

While AJ is far from perfect, she has undoubtedly become the best female character on the baby face side of the Divas division. Of course, it helps that she actually has one while most other face Divas don’t, but you get the point.

AJ has developed into this very submissive, “I’ll do anything to please my boyfriend” type of character, thanks to her involvement with World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan.

Bryan has evolved into one hell of a jerk as a heel, and he’s taken a baby face AJ along for the ride with him. He’s told her things like “That dress looked better on the mannequin” and refused to tell her he loves her, making her feel like absolute crap in the process, but at the same time, helping her gain more and more sympathy from the fans.

That was never more evident than it was during the opening segment on last Friday’s Smackdown, when Bryan essentially forced AJ to say some ridiculous things about him to make him look good, even having her praise his lovemaking skills.

It was a bit over the top, sure. But if one of the goals of the segment was to get AJ more over than she already is, then it worked very effectively.

Later in the show, AJ came out for a match against one of the Bella Twins (I don’t remember, nor do I care which one it was), and she beat the Bella for the second consecutive week. Yet in true Daniel Bryan fashion, Bryan celebrated AJ’s win as if he was the won who actually won the match.

I loved this because it accomplished two things at once, making Bryan look like a jerk while helping AJ become more popular with the fans.

We can’t wait to see to AJ slap the crap out of Bryan, break up with him and then move on to bigger and better things. And it certainly appears as if that’s where this relationship is headed.

There is a rumor floating around that AJ is going to get a push for Beth Phoenix’s Divas Championship soon, and it appears as if her current storyline with Bryan will lead her to the title picture.

Considering that AJ should have won the all-female season of NXT, I guess that’s the least they can do, right?

Note: As part of the new WWE blog, I'll be asking all of the B/R wrestling readers for questions for a new mailbag that I will post on Fridays. It will be a slideshow featuring 10-20 questions and answers on a wide range of topics. You can submit questions either through Formspring or Twitter, and the best ones will be answered in the B/R mailbag.
