WrestleMania 28: Title Matches That Would Greatly Improve WWE's Biggest Event

Mike ChiariMar 28, 2012

With four main-event-caliber matches on tap, WrestleMania XXVIII looks as if it can be one of the best of all time. With that said, though, I can't help but think that more could have been done with the undercard. Namely, I would have preferred if every title was being defended.

The card certainly isn't going to change at this juncture, but I can't help but wonder what the point of a title is if it isn't going to be defended on the most important show of the year. It used to be that every single championship was defended at WrestleMania, but that hasn't been the case for quite some time for whatever reason.

Here are three title matches that would have filled out Sunday's undercard and made WrestleMania XXVIII the most well-rounded in recent memory.

Primo & Epico vs. Dolph Ziggler & Jack Swagger vs. Kofi Kingston & R-Truth vs. The Usos

It is obviously no secret that the WWE's tag-team division is in complete disarray and in need of an overhaul. The Tag Team Championships haven't been made to look significant for a couple years at least, and that is buoyed by the fact that they won't be defended at WrestleMania XXVIII unless it happens in the dark match. Even with all of that in mind, the WWE could easily have a viable tag division if it put the slightest bit of effort into it.

Say what you will about the current champions Primo & Epico, but I find them to be an exciting team that is together for a purpose, which you don't often see anymore. They could be pushed as a legitimate team if they had a bit of competition.

One way to get them over would be to put them in a big match at wrestling's biggest event. A match between the champions, The Usos, Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger, and Kofi Kingston and R-Truth would have been great. Add in a gimmick like TLC and people just might get behind the tag division again.

Santino vs. Zack Ryder

Despite how much was made of the United States Championship during Zack Ryder's pursuit of it during the winter, it will not be defended at WrestleMania as current champion Santino will be a part of Team Teddy against Team Johnny. The 12-man tag match is all well and good, but it shouldn't come at the expense of defending the United States Championship.

One match that surely would have won the fans over is a face vs. face match for the title between Santino and Ryder.

Ryder was desperate to win the United States Championship, and when he did there was a huge celebration. He eventually lost it when he was forced to wrestle "injured," but when he returned from "injury" he didn't make any mention of the title. Ryder should be invoking in rematch clause against Santino in a match that simply wouldn't fail. Ryder and Santino are the two most over comedic guys in the company, so the crowd would be hot for the match ad neither showman would disappoint.

Beth Phoenix vs. Natalya

I have to believe that the original plan for Divas Champion Beth Phoenix at WrestleMania was to face a returning Kharma as Beth has been decimating the divas division for the past several months. Due to the highly unfortunate news about Kharma losing her child, however, that obviously couldn't happen. It's tough to blame creative when you consider those circumstances, but they did a poor job of finding an alternative.

Rather than letting Beth defend her title like she should, she has been lumped into a sideshow tag team match along with Eve against Kelly Kelly and Extra host Maria Menounos.

While it wouldn't quite have lived up to Beth vs. Kharma, most fans would have loved to see Beth vs. Natalya. It wouldn't have been difficult to build over a couple weeks as it could have been said that Natalya didn't like the attitude Beth developed and that it was her fault the Divas of Doom broke up. At the very least, we would have gotten an entertaining match out of it.
