2012 NFL Draft: Jim Irsay Claims Andrew Luck Isn't a Lock for No. 1 Pick
Jim Irsay is now saying that it's not a lock the Indianapolis Colts will draft Andrew Luck, pointing to Robert Griffin III as an option.
Irsay said on Tuesday, via USA Today:
"It's up in the air. We have to look at this thing completely open-minded.
You have two outstanding athletes, two great pure passers, two guys from families that are incredible.
"
I'm here to tell you that Irsay is full of it.
This is not a knock against Griffin. I, for one, believe he's going to be a star in the NFL. Not only does he have the ability to scramble for first downs, but he's a much better pocket passer and decision maker than people give him credit for.
That being said, Luck is a once-in-a-generation prospect. He may not have the legs or arm strength of Griffin, but he does everything else better. He completed 46-of-50 passes at Stanford's pro day last week, and three of his four incompletions were dropped balls.
Kind of makes you think what horror in the world caused him to flub that one pass.
After Luck's pro day, former Colts general manager Bill Polian said, via Pro Football Talk:
"Bottom line, this is a no-lose decision. Both players in my mind are absolutely as sure as can be to make it in the National Football League...These guys are locks. The question is who fits best. I believe the answer is Mr. [Jim] Irsay feels that Andrew fits best.
Bottom line, welcome to Indianapolis, Andrew.
"
The reality is, it doesn't matter who fits best anyway. Luck is being called the next Peyton Manning. In fact, many draft experts have said he's a better prospect than Manning was when he came out of Tennessee.
You can't tell me that the Denver Broncos signed Manning this offseason because he was merely a good fit. He's a future Hall of Famer—that's why the Broncos signed him.
Luck has all the characteristics of a future superstar in the NFL, and he doesn't have the durability concerns that Griffin does. If Irsay and the Colts do pass up Luck for Griffin, they will be hearing about it for a good decade.
