Tim Tebow: Tony Romo's Endorsement a Subtle Insult to Mark Sanchez
Tony Romo recently offered his thoughts on the soon-to-be quarterback controversy in New York, and his take meant bad news for Mark Sanchez.
The Cowboys quarterback, speaking to ESPN over the weekend, said:
"I thought Tim had a great season last year. I think he continues to grow as a quarterback and he's got a bright future. … Any time a team can get better, I think they're always trying to upgrade and that's a part of a front office's job is to help the football team. I think that's all that teams are doing.
"
Maybe Romo should've stopped talking at "he had a great season." Or maybe he shouldn't have started at all.
Romo's acknowledgement that the Jets "upgraded" by acquiring Tebow is a bit of a jab at Sanchez, who has served as the team's starting quarterback for the last three seasons. Though the Jets' front office has insisted that Tebow has been brought in solely as a backup, no one is really buying it and everyone expects him to compete with Sanchez for the starting job.
Also, when is the last time a Cowboys quarterback was asked to comment on another team's acquisition of a backup quarterback?
This is one of those situations when Romo should've kept his mouth shut, or showed a little bit more awareness of the implications of his words. Instead, he stepped on a land mine.
Surely Romo's comments were meant to be harmless, but this guy has been the starting quarterback of an NFL team in a major market for six years now. He should understand the way things work. He should understand, at this point, that when the media goads you into commenting on one of the most controversial storylines of the upcoming season, it is better to just smile and decline to comment.
Instead, intentionally or not, he has aligned himself with Team Tebow. Next time, he should choose his words a bit more carefully.
