WrestleMania 28: What Will The Rock's WWE Role Be Once PPV Ends?

The most anticipated match in WWE history is less than a week away and I’m already wondering what’s next.

The Rock vs. John Cena has been hyped up for months now and fans will finally get to see it happen this Sunday at WrestleMania 28 in Rock’s hometown of Miami. Regardless of who wins, this isn’t the last time you’ll be able to see Dwayne Johnson drop a “Rock Bottom” onto an opponent.

The Rock has already agreed to participate in next year’s WrestleMania 29 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, but nobody is sure what exactly that role might be. When asked about his future with WWE, Rock was rather generic for once (via AP):

"I came back to put on the biggest match of all time. That's all I want to do." 

One potential idea that has been thrown around is a battle against Brock Lesnar, the former WWE and UFC heavyweight champ. When asked about it, Rock might have spoiled the surprise (via AP):

"I'm not saying a thing," said a laughing, grinning Rock, eyebrow raised. "I didn't say anything."

Hmmmm.

It’s easy to see why the WWE wants Rock. PPV sales are up and TV ratings for Monday Night Raw (4.82 million) were better than the highest-rated NCAA tournament game on cable (4.43 million). He is arguably the most popular figure in the sport since Hulk Hogan.

But is that what Rock wants to do?

He has become a movie star in every sense of the phrase. His latest flick Journey 2: The Mysterious Island just grossed $300 million worldwide and before that Fast Five raked in over $210 million domestically.

He doesn’t need to risk his health and travel on the road constantly to appease a niche fanbase. Rock is universally known.

So expect Rock to shine in his hometown of Miami and take down Cena in an incredibly memorable match. Then he’ll go away for a while and resume is movie star career.

At some point in the fall he will resurface and allow the hype train for his appearance at WrestleMania 29 begin.

The only question is…who is he going to set his sights on?
