WrestleMania 28: Why WWE Needs The Rock vs. John Cena to Be a Classic

Adam WellsJun 4, 2018

WrestleMania 28 is stacked with matches that have great potential, but the most important one by far is the main event between The Rock and John Cena. It is the biggest drawing card on the show, and it can't afford to be a letdown.

The main event of WrestleMania is supposed to be the most important match of the year for WWE. It helps to set the tone for what is going to come the rest of the year, and fans will always look back at the show based on what closed the show.

Think back to last year's WrestleMania. The first thought that comes to mind is how bad the main event between John Cena and Miz was. It makes the rest of the show seem lackluster, which it largely was.

But that match did not have the build or hype behind it that Rock vs. Cena has. Rock is one of the biggest stars in the history of wrestling. He left the business eight years ago to pursue other opportunities and has made a successful film career for himself.

Yet here he is, bringing his career full circle by wrestling at WrestleMania for the first time since 2004.

Cena has been adrift in a lot of meaningless feuds that have portrayed his opponents like dorks and made him look like an idiot, especially when he tried to tell those horrible jokes that bombed.

Rock's return has sparked something in Cena and the creative team. This hasn't been a perfect build, but by today's standards, it is pretty damn good.

WrestleMania 28 is going to be one of the most successful WWE shows ever because of this match. WWE can't afford to have it be anything less than a classic WrestleMania main event.

The ripple effect that this could have on the future of Rock and Cena can't be understated. Rock has been training hard to make sure that he is prepared for this match. He wants to give the crowd something they remember forever.

Cena needs to have a great WrestleMania match to show the fans that last year was merely an aberration, not a trend.

There are other matches that will likely be more technically sound, but Rock vs. Cena has to be the one that everyone remembers as the best of the night.
