Tim Tebow Press Conference: Why Charisma Won't Win Over New York Media
Tim Tebow is about to get his first taste of the NYC media, and it’s going to be a circus.
The most popular athlete of the last six months has a new team and it juuuuust so happens to be in the biggest media market in the country.
The New York Jets have set a noon ET press conference for Tim Terrific on Monday, and it’s safe to say every member of the New York media will be there. At least that’s what the organization thinks, moving the festivities from the normal press conference room to the indoor practice facility.
Can you say circus?
There is going to be all kinds of off-the-wall questions, and Tebow will handle all of them with nothing but class. But this is the angry and apathetic New York media we’re talking about here. They are going to be prodding and poking for any sort of juicy tidbit.
The Denver media seemingly fell in love with the 24-year-old instantly, but the Big Apple is different. They aren’t going to give him a chance. The back page headlines are going to be brutal.
Even the team has their reservations. According to Brian Costello of the New York Post, several Jets players are not pleased with the way Tebow is being introduced to the team.
Former Jet Damien Woody called out the organization for giving the new backup QB so much attention (via New York Post):
""How many times has a backup quarterback had a press conference? How many times have there been helicopters to meet a backup quarterback at the airport? The organization is saying he's the backup quarterback. Well, then why do you feel like you have to have a press conference? Why not just do a conference call and call it a day?
"It's a marketing ploy."
"
The Jets don’t know what they are getting themselves into with Tebow and will have to have a strong support group around him to ensure he doesn’t break. The media is going to be relentless with the questions about Mark Sanchez and his personal life.
But with Tebow’s attitude about life, he can survive the media. His personality will shine, even if the negativity engulfs the headlines.
The real question is simple: can Tebow survive Mark Sanchez?
