NFL Free Agency Rumors: 6 Veterans Who Are in for a Tough Camp Battle

Jake MartinJun 2, 2018

David Garrard will have his hands full this offseason.

As suddenly as he was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars last season, Garrard was picked up by the Miami Dolphins in a move that made every NFL fan scratch their heads.

Now, the 34-year-old veteran will have to beat out 27-year-old Matt Moore in order to be the Dolphins starter for the 2012 season.

Along with Garrard, these are the other notable veterans that are sure to be in for a tough camp battle.

David Garrard

It's not like the Miami Dolphins are stacked at quarterback, but can Garrard really be the starter for the Dolphins?

After all, Moore wasn't all that bad for the Dolphins. Last season, he threw for 2,497 yards, 16 touchdowns and only nine interceptions.

Not too shabby. So my next question is did the Dolphins bring Garrard in to push Moore to a better quarterback and that alone? Let's not forget that the last time Garrard played, he threw 15 interceptions and had six fumbles with the Jags in 2010.

Granted, I've never played quarterback, but it has to be unbelievably difficult for an aging quarterback to take a year off and then come back to the league at the top of his game. Good luck, David, because you're going to need it.

Donte' Stallworth

Donte' Stallworth is only a shell of what he used to be.

When Stallworth was with the New Orleans Saints in 2005, he had 70 receptions, 945 receiving yards and seven touchdowns, and that was with Aaron Brooks throwing him the football.

Fast forward six years and Stallworth is with the Washington Redskins making 22 grabs and only two touchdowns, and in 2012, this 31-year-old is going to reunite with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.

Not only did the Patriots bring him in, but they also brought Anthony Gonzalez and Brandon Lloyd. You know younger, more productive receivers that make Brady and that Patriots offense that more dangerous.

With more attractive additions like Gonzalez and Lloyd and the Patriots' two tight end sets, Stallworth will be lucky to get a couple of snaps a game.

Andre' Goodman

If the old saying "iron sharpens iron" has any truth to it, the Denver Broncos have to love their position battle at cornerback.

The Broncos adding Tracy Porter is not only going to challenge their starting cornerbacks, but it's going to add a tremendous amount of depth.

Andre' Goodman and Champ Bailey are aging cornerbacks, and because Bailey is one of the greatest cornerbacks of all time, Goodman will have to hold off Porter.

Goodman, 33, had 49 tackles and two interceptions in 2011, while Porter, 25, had 52 tackles, two forced fumbles and one interception that very same year.

Porter proved to the Broncos' new quarterback, Peyton Manning, just how effective he can be in big moments when he picked Manning off in Super Bowl 44, and he's going to give Goodman a steep challenge.

Spencer Johnson

The Buffalo Bills are stacked at the defensive end position.

With Mario Williams coming to town, the Bills have four capable starters. Along with Williams, the Bills have Spencer Johnson and Chris Kelsay battling it out for the other spot, and not to mention, they have Shawne Merriman, who can play end as well as linebacker.

Johnson, a nine-year veteran, had 47 tackles last year and two sacks through 16 games, while Kelsay had 41 tackles and five sacks in 12 games.

I predict an intense defensive end battle in the near future.

Chad Ochocinco

5 of 6

Is Chad Ochocinco even relevant anymore?

I remember when this guy used to be one of the best wide receivers in the league, and now, I wouldn't be surprised to see him absent from the field in 2012.

Last season was the worst season in his career, as he had a career-low 276 receiving yards and one touchdown. As I mentioned in a previous slide, the Patriots are bringing in Gonzalez, Lloyd and Stallworth, so Ochocinco's return to glory is highly unlikely.

At age 34, Ochocinco isn't the receiver he once was, and with the wide receiver position getting more and more crowded in New England, Ochocinco will remain to be irrelevant.

Kevin Boss

6 of 6

Though the Kansas City Chiefs want to implement the New England Patriots style of using two tight ends, Kevin Boss is going to have to put in the work for reps.

Considering that Tony Moeaki is the Chiefs other tight end, I don't like Boss' chances of starting. Though Moeaki was injured last season, he showed in 2010 that he is one of the most athletic tight ends in the league with catches like this.

In that same season, Moeaki garnered 47 catches, 556 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Those stats outweigh what Boss did in Oakland with the Raiders last season, as he had 28 receptions, 368 yards and three touchdowns.

The Chiefs will use Boss and Moeaki in multiple tight end sets, but Boss will have to outwork Moeaki this offseason to get as many reps as possible.
