2012 NFL Mock Draft: Jacksonville Jaguars 7-Round Selections, April Edition
Here is the gospel.
Everything you need to know about the Jaguars in seven rounds. I know you all are waiting with bated breathe for these selections.
Believe it or not, the Jaguars have done a very good job this free agency to bring in players who help fill holes and solve problems to missing pieces of the whole puzzle.
The team solidified the defense by signing their existing free agents (with the exception of Matt Roth) and have 10 starters returning for 2010. The team then went out and signed Aaron Ross to give them more depth in the secondary.
Now comes the hard part of deciding where to draft the other key components to the team's needs and when to find real value in later rounds.
Jaguars general manager Gene Smith and team owner Shahid Khan took a lot of heat for not landing Tim Tebow last week, but it may prove to the best thing for this team that the "rock star" football player did not choose Jacksonville as his next destination in his football career.
Now, the team can concentrate on areas of need (defensive line, receiver, offensive line) and plug holes with the best talent available.
First Round (7th Selection Overall): Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina
1 of 7The pick comes down to four players.
Ingram can play defensive end or linebacker. He can also play inside on third downs.
Quinton Coples is a speed rusher from North Carolina, but takes plays off and does not always look the part.
Morris Claiborne is the best defensive back on the board, but he won't be available when the Jaguars pick seventh.
Justin Blackmon is the best receiver on the draft board, but most figure Tampa Bay or St. Louis will snag him unless the Jaguars trade up.
Ingram makes the most sense for his value and where the team is selecting him. He could be the Tony Brackens-type player this team has been looking for.
Second Round (38th Overall): Mohamed Sanu, Wide Receiver, Rutgers
2 of 7A tough call here with Alshon Jeffery still on the board. I have been high on Sanu all season and think three years down the road, he will be a better prospect and better pro than Jeffery.
Does he project to be better than former Rutgers star Kenny Britt? We aren't sure yet. But at 6'2", he is a nice target for Blaine Gabbert and the Jaguars offense.
Third Round (71st Selection Overall): Kelechi Osemele, Guard, Iowa State
3 of 7The Jaguars hit a home run with this pick.
Osemele can play both guard positions and possibly center when Brad Meester calls it a career.
He is huge and played against some of the best defensive fronts in the country while playing for Iowa State in the Big Ten.
He and Uche Nwaneri could form a nice guard tandem for the next half-decade.
Fourth Round (102nd Selection Overall): Greg Childs, Wide Receiver, Arkansas
4 of 7Childs may be gone when this pick is made, but I think at his size (6'3" and 220 pounds), he is ideal for this team.
Joe Adams was the speedster I thought this team may go after in the draft, but his pro day was not as good as scouts had hoped.
Childs could be a the consistent outside threat this team needs and in the fourth round, he could be a real steal for the Jaguars.
Fifth Round (135th Selection Overall): Chris Rainey, Running Back, Florida
5 of 7If he is here in the fifth round, it is actually a crime.
The small but ultra-fast Rainey can do just about everything. And the Jaguars can never have too many scoring threats on this team.
He has been compared in speed to Percy Harvin and his size makes him very elusive and hard to tackle.
If he can help on special teams, the Jaguars will be ultra-happy.
Sixth Round (166th Selection Overall): Jonathan Massaquoi, Linebacker, Troy
6 of 7Here's some help on special teams.
If he makes it to the rotation of linebackers, his size at 6'2" and 264 pounds will come in handy.
He could be a surprise as a pass-rusher off the edge this team still needs. He could replace Austen Lane in the rotation if he has an outstanding preseason and training camp.
He could also play linebacker as well.
Seventh Round (199th Selection Overall): Gerell Robinson, Wide Receiver, Arizona St.
7 of 7Another wide receiver taken by the Jaguars.
Robinson did not have the best of outings in the Senior Bowl, but he can still be a special teams help.
The Jaguars cut Kassim Osgood in the offseason, so maybe at 6'3", Robinson takes his slot?
The Jaguars' special teams unit really took a step forward in the second half of the season.
