WrestleMania 28: A History of Triple H and Undertaker's Long-Standing Feud

Adam WellsJun 7, 2018

Whenever The Undertaker is in a match at WrestleMania, the anticipation goes up a little bit more because of the way "The Streak" has captivated the WWE audience.

Triple H has been on television for the last two months doing all he can to convince the world that he will finally break the most hallowed record in the history of the company.

But this rivalry goes back a long time. It is amazing to look at how long both Undertaker and Triple H have been with the company, only to realize they have done a handful of major programs with each other.

We will breakdown the history of this intense rivalry, as well as a look at what to expect when they lock horns at WrestleMania 28.

The Forgotten Match

WWE loves to use revisionist history with everything that happens, which is why you never hear anyone talk about the first major Undertaker vs. Triple H match at WrestleMania X-Seven.

There is some justification for it, since it would not be easy to sell a feud if everyone was running around talking about how Undertaker has beat Triple H clean twice at the biggest show the company has to offer.

Still, this was one of the better Undertaker matches during The Streak, at least before the Shawn Michaels rivalry started.

The most enduring image from this match was Undertaker's head just gushing blood after a shot to the head with a sledgehammer.

The Two-Man Power Trip

Not one of their longest feuds but another major program that these two did with each other was right after WrestleMania.

Triple H was part of a tag team with "Stone Cold" Steve Austin called "The Two-Man Power Trip." Undertaker and Kane were the ones trying to keep them down.

This setup a tag match at Backlash, where Intercontinental Champion Triple H and WWE Champion Austin put their titles on the line against tag champions Undertaker and Kane.

Triple H and Austin walked away with all the gold by defeating the "Brothers of Destruction."

WrestleMania 27

After 10 years of not crossing paths, Triple H made it his mission to break The Streak by challenging Undertaker to a match. The February 21 edition of RAW was the first time that either star had been seen on WWE television since April 2010.

The match itself was one of the best WWE put on in 2011. It was very different from the previous two matches that Undertaker had with Shawn Michaels, as you would expect.

It was a vicious back-and-forth battle that featured chair shots to the head and other banned moves.

The most memorable spot was Triple H nailing Undertaker with a Tombstone. The crowd, which has been groomed to believe that it is just a matter of when Undertaker wins, actually seemed shocked that he kicked out of the move.

Undertaker walked away with a victory after locking in the gogoplata, but he had to be carried from the ring on a stretcher. It was the last time he was seen prior to January 30, 2012.

WrestleMania 28

All of that has led to April 1, 2012: WrestleMania 28. The biggest wrinkle that WWE has thrown into the mix this year is the inclusion of Shawn Michaels as the special referee.

The Hell In a Cell stipulation will help add to the drama, but the story is going to be what these two men do to each other in a match with everything on the line.

With all the talk of this match being the end of an era, you wonder what stops they will pull out. Will there be blood? How will Michaels make his presence felt? Will this be the last match for Undertaker and/or Triple H?

All of those questions and so many more will be answered in just six days at the greatest spectacle in professional wrestling.
