WWE WrestleMania: What Was the Greatest Diva's Match in WWE History?

Justin WatryJun 7, 2018

Before I begin, let me put up a few notes!

1. This is only discussing past WrestleMania shows.

2. Mixed tag matches do not count.

3. This is just my opinion.

On April 1st, 2012, Eve Torres and Beth Phoenix will take on Kelly Kelly and Maria Menounos. It is sure to be a nice tag team match that will bring some media attention to the company.

The likely finish has Maria winning, posing and earning some publicity for a few days. After that, everybody will be on the look out for Kharma returning to WWE. She is the ultimate key in deciding the division's success in the new year.

However, what about WrestleMania events from the last 27 years?

That is what I am looking into now. Of all the diva matches in 'Mania history, only a few could be considered the greatest. Fair or not, that is just the reality.

Right off the bat, I can eliminate any match before WrestleMania XV. Sorry, but none of those matches did it for me.

In 1999, Sable fought Tori, and it wasn't very good. We saw an appearance from the infamous Nicole Bass, and nothing would ever be the same again.

I already wrote about WrestleMania 2000. The diva's match there was a disaster.

Wrestle Mania XVII had a three-minute title match between Chyna and Ivory. It the was definition of a "squash," and it nearly killed the division for a year.

WWE saw a glimpse of greatness in Toronto 12 months later. Trish, Jazz and Lita all battling for the belt was a great thing to see.

Sadly, it was between Hulk Hogan vs. The Rock and Chris Jericho vs. Triple H for the Undisputed Championship. The three women never had much of a chance, even in Canada. Sorry!

WrestleMania XIX was a step in the right direction. It was another triple threat title match, this time with Trish Stratus, Victoria and Jazz. All three worked well, and it was nice to see the title change.

At WrestleMania XX, we actually saw two separate diva matches. One was a tag team match with Sable and Torrie Wilson vs. Stacy Kiebler and Miss Jackie. It was your standard "lingerie" battle, so it wouldn't rank highly on any lists.

For the Women's title, it was Victoria vs. Molly Holly. Of course, Molly ended up getting her head shaved at the end, but the actual match was "only" good. Nothing special, just good!

At WrestleMania in 2005, Trish defended the gold against Christy Hemme. I am sorry, but this match wasn't very entertaining. Trish beat her in a few minutes, just as she should have.

In 2006, Candice Michelle and Torrie Wilson fought in some sort of Pillow Fight. Yeah, that was not going to be a "classic match" anywhere.

WrestleMania in 2007 and 2008 were basically the same match. Yes, one was a singles match, while the other was a tag team match. It didn't matter. Both were just "there," and we all moved on.

At WrestleMania XXV, we saw a very fun battle royal. Many divas from the past returned. Sadly, I can't count this match, as Santino Marella was involved. Thus, it is disqualified!

WrestleMania XXVI saw a nice moment for Vickie Guerrero. Other than that, the tag team match was nothing to write home about.

As you can see, there are not many choices. However, there is one match that is the clear front-runner for greatest diva's match in WrestleMania history.

Wrestle Mania XXII: Trish Stratus (Women's Champion) vs. Mickie James.

In my opinion, it isn't even a contest. The feud was actually given a couple of months to build. The characters were cleared defined, and the match delivered inside the squared circle.

WWE deserves a ton of credit for letting these two show off their skills here. It would have been very easy to give these two a few minutes and call it a day.

Not here!

Trish and Mickie were given a video package, full entrances and about 15 minutes to prove to the world how talented they were. Needless to say, they did not disappoint at all.

Not only did Mickie defeat Trish to win the gold, it was the end of a long reign from Ms. Stratus. It made the title change actually mean something, and it was slowly moving towards a new era.

The crowd was with them the entire way. Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler called a great match, and we saw a historic meeting. You couldn't ask for much more than one of the best 'Mania shows of all time!
