Wrestlemania 28: Why CM Punk Will Lose His Title at Big Event

CM Punk is the biggest star in the WWE, and it's time for him to lose the title. Punk has reached the level of popularity that doesn't require a title to validate it. Because of this, you will see him lose his title at WrestleMania to Chris Jericho.

He's held the title since just after Halloween, so it's been long enough to have staked a claim to it in the minds of fans. Without a title, he'd still be a bigger draw than Daniel Bryan is now, or any other current title holder.

From an overall popularity standpoint, he has nothing to lose. If the circumstances behind the way he loses the gold are done correctly, it would boost his popularity.

This is a perfect opportunity for the WWE to honor Chris Jericho, and even allow an up and comer to have a run at the title.

Jericho is an all-time great, and a huge fan favorite. He deserves to have this run maximized and punctuated with a title, even if it's a short run.

Kofi Kingston, Wade Barrett and Dolph Ziggler are all waiting in the wings for a true main-event push. It makes sense to sacrifice three or four months of Punk with the gold to put someone else over.

Jericho's reign will be a short one, as I don't see him as a long-term presence. In fact, the WWE would be smart to put an angle in motion that re-directs Punk's attention away from Jericho, and attaches Jericho to one of the aforementioned up and comers.

It will work to write Jericho's exit from the title picture, while crowning one of the young guns as champion. Meanwhile, Punk could feud with a named star, likely one who comes close to matching Punk in popularity.

The Miz anyone?

This would allow Punk to stay in the limelight somewhat, as the story line works itself back around to another title shot. 

Punk deserves to be the champion throughout most of this, the peak of his wrestling career. But this is a perfect time for him to drop the gold for the betterment of the overall brand.
