The Dallas Mavericks and 7 Teams the Los Angeles Lakers Have Owned

Andre KhatchaturianJun 7, 2018

The Los Angeles Lakers get set to take on the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday evening.

When one looks at all of the epic battles between these two teams, it becomes easy to overlook the historical dominance the Lakers have had over the Mavericks.

In fact, the Lakers have pretty much had their way against every team in the NBA. They have a winning record against every current and defunct team other than the Charlotte Bobcats and the Boston Celtics.

Some of these teams, the Lakers have really owned.

Here are seven of them.

Memphis Grizzlies

1 of 7

The Memphis Grizzlies (formerly the Vancouver Grizzlies) haven't had much success against anyone in the NBA ever since they came into the league.

The Lakers have absolutely feasted on them. In 62 games, the Lakers have won 46 of them and have kept the Grizzlies to just 95.1 points per game. That average is the second-lowest point total against the Lakers among all active NBA teams.

To be fair, most of the Lakers damage against the Grizzlies came when they just entered the league, when the Lakers won 28 of the first 31 meetings.

Since then, they're just 18-13 against Memphis.

Los Angeles Clippers

Up until this year, the Los Angeles Clippers have been the "other" team in L.A. Simply by looking at all the gold championship banners hanging on the walls at Staples Center, one can easily see how dominant the Lakers have been compared to the Clippers.

The same has been true in head-to-head meetings.

The two have been battling since the franchise was located in Buffalo in 1970 and have played 191 times.

The Lakers have won 142 of those games, for a winning percentage of .743. In fact, other than a brief stretch where the Buffalo Braves beat the Lakers five straight times, the Clippers franchise has failed to establish a winning streak longer than three games.

Meanwhile, the Lakers have kicked the Clippers in the forehead, once winning 16 consecutive games against the lowly Clippers in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

All of that being said, the Battle of L.A. has become more balanced recently. Since 2010, the Lakers are just 5-4 against the Clippers.

Dallas Mavericks

It's hard to believe that the Dallas Mavericks have only beaten the Lakers 31 times in franchise history.

In fact, the Lakers will be looking for their 100th win against the Mavericks on Wednesday night in the 132nd tilt between the two teams that are now rivals.

From 1995 until 2000, the Lakers defeated the Mavs 19 consecutive times. It's been less lopsided ever since Mark Cuban took over the team; but since that winning streak, the Lakers are still 29-15 against the Mavericks.

Dallas got some revenge last year in the playoffs, but overall the Lakers have been a nightmare for the Mavs.

Toronto Raptors

The Toronto Raptors, like the Memphis Grizzlies, have struggled to do anything positive against the Los Angeles Lakers ever since their entrance into the NBA in 1995.

The Lakers hold a 25-6 record against Canada's team and have only lost to them twice at Staples Center. That's the best record against any active team in the NBA.

Of course, one of the most memorable games in Lakers history came against the Raptors when Kobe Bryant scored 81 points in one game back in 2006.

Minnesota Timberwolves

5 of 7

After the Lakers bolted to Los Angeles from Minnesota, the Minnesota Timberwolves brought back basketball to the great state back in 1989.

The Lakers, however, have imposed their will on the Wolves. They hold a 67-21 record against them and are currently on a 19-game winning streak against the Wolves.

They also defeated Minnesota in the 2004 Western Conference Finals.

Sacramento Kings

6 of 7

On November 14, 1948, the Minneapolis Lakers lost to the Rochester Royals, 92-75.

The Lakers bounced back by winning 261 of the next 401 games. Meanwhile, the Royals franchise moved three times from Rochester to Cincinnati to Kansas City and now to Sacramento.

Wherever they've been, the Lakers have dominated them. Currently, the Lakers are 83-32 against the Sacramento-based franchise, including playoff dominance in the early 2000s.

From 1983 to 1988, the Lakers defeated the Kings 24 consecutive times.

Golden State Warriors

7 of 7

The Los Angeles Lakers and the Golden State Warriors have been playing against each other since 1948 when the franchises played in Minneapolis and Philadelphia, respectively.

And 389 games later, the Lakers hold a dominant 241-148 record against the Warriors.

A lot of those wins have come recently, as the Lakers have given Golden State a really tough time. Since December 6, 1994, the Lakers are 52-11 against their Northern California rivals.

The Lakers recently had a 12-game winning streak against the Warriors snapped last April, but don't be surprised if they establish another chain of victories soon.
