WrestleMania 28 Predictions: CM Punk Will Spoil Chris Jericho's Mania Return

Mike ChiariMar 20, 2012

Even with most of the focus on The Rock vs. John Cena and The Undertaker vs. Triple H, there is reason to believe that CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho for the WWE Championship will steal the show at WrestleMania XXVIII. With that said, though, Punk is a sure bet to retain.

To this point, the Punk vs. Jericho feud has been extremely entertaining as both are masterful on the mic. The premise of Jericho wanting to reclaim his title of best in the world from Punk is a natural feud starter and it is something that makes this rivalry so pure and believable.

Jericho's recent poking and prodding of Punk has been excellent as he has revealed that Punk's father was an alcoholic and that his sister is a drug addict. This has added a new dimension to the feud as it isn't just about the WWE Championship—it's personal.

Over the past few weeks, Y2J has gotten the better of Punk as he beat him in a tag-team match and has frustrated Punk with his verbal barbs. However, Punk is currently the No. 2 guy in the company right now behind John Cena, and it would be a shock to see him lose at WrestleMania.

This will be Punk's first Mania as an established top guy and because of that he needs the victory. I'm a fan of both superstars, but I would say that I'm more of a Jericho fan. Putting my own personal bias aside, however, Punk has a lot more to gain from a win than Jericho does.

The result at WrestleMania will also have a lot to do with Jericho's status within the company. If he is going to stick around for a while then there is a slight chance that he could win. This is because he and Punk could continue their feud with Punk eventually going over. If Jericho is only signed through WrestleMania, though, that makes it quite obvious that he won't win.

Since Jericho has been wrestling house shows, I'm inclined to believe that he'll stick around for a little while, but that doesn't change my opinion of what is likely to happen. Even though Jericho was probably compensated handsomely to return, he has never had an issue with putting guys over, and it seems clear to me that he will do the same for Punk.

That isn't to say that Jericho will be made to look incompetent or anything of that nature, as the match itself should be a classic between one of the best workers today in Punk and one of the best workers of all time in Jericho.

Jericho fully understands and embraces is role as a heel, and that is to agitate fans and look like a threat to their hero. Jericho certainly looks like a threat as he currently has Punk off his game from a storyline sense. That will make it an even greater WrestleMania moment when Punk is able to rise up and defeat Jericho, who has been made to look like his equal.

Although the ultimate conclusion of the feud may seem obvious, it shouldn't take away from your enjoyment as a fan. There's no way of knowing for sure, but this could very well be Jericho's final WrestleMania match.

He isn't going to go out on top with a win, but he and Punk promise to put together one of the best Mania matches in recent memory.
