WrestleMania 28: What Role Will Eve Torres Play at the Event?

Sharon GlencrossMar 18, 2012

As one of WWE's emerging female stars, many are wondering the exact role Diva Search winner Eve Torres will play at WrestleMania on April 1.

Ever since she shockingly turned heel on on-screen love interest Zack Ryder, she's been on a roll as a manipulative, attention-hungry shrew who will use anyone and anything to garner exposure and publicity for herself.

Of course, in one respect, this is a very easy question to answer: It was announced several days ago that Torres would team with Divas Champion Beth Phoenix to take on the dynamic duo of Kelly Kelly and NBC's Extra host Maria Menounos at the event, which takes place in Miami, Fla.

The match came about after Torres and Phoenix, who have bitterly complained in recent interviews that Menounos has snubbed them by not inviting them onto her show, crashed an interview Menounos was doing with Kelly.

After a heated verbal exchange, which threatened to spill over into a physical confrontation, the pair challenged Menounos to a match at WM. The showbiz interviewer, likely caught up in the moment, accepted.

Security then escorted Torres and Phoenix off the stage, leaving the anxious Extra host to wonder what she had gotten herself into. Thankfully, babyface Kelly vowed to have her back at the event.

However, while she is in the match, Eve's role is not yet fixed. Is she merely a supporting character for the Phoenix/Menounos feud (which has been going on since December's Tribute to the Troops show, after the star shockingly pinned the Divas Champion via a sunset-flip pin)?

Or will she take on a starring role in the match? At this point, she is arguably a far bigger star in the promotion than the forgotten Phoenix (who, despite being Divas Champion has only made a handful of appearances on Raw and SmackDown over the past few months), and it wouldn't be surprising for her to have a bigger role in the bout than most would initially think.

Another aspect to consider is Eve's current storyline with Zack Ryder and how that is set to play out at WrestleMania.

The former NBA dancer has been stringing along Ryder for months now, even kissing his best friend John Cena in a backstage skit and acknowledging in interviews she is merely toying with his emotions for her amusement.

Poor Zack seems to understand how manipulative and crafty she is, but remains completely infatuated with her. Indeed, even after everything she has done to him, he was still trying to get a date with her on last week's episode of Raw (it was later revealed she stood him up).

Many fans and critics have complained that this storyline with Eve has wrecked Ryder's credibility and made him look like a complete fool.

This may be a good point. Certainly, it's hard to see how Ryder has been aided by an angle that has seen his status plummet from US Champion to a lovesick puppy and locker-room joke in a matter of months.

But the angle does seems to be building toward the treacherous Eve getting her comeuppance in some manner or other. And if Zack turns the tables on Eve and publicly and embarrassingly dumps her at WM, he can surely regain some of his diminishing credibility and look cool in the eyes of fans again.

Summarily, it will be interesting to see what direction Eve's career takes at WrestleMania. The company seems to see a lot of potential in her as a heel character, judging by her high profile on recent episodes of Raw and SmackDown, and all indications are she will be playing a major role at the event.
