NFL Free Agent Signings: Most Surprising Moves of Early Offseason

Wes ODonnellJun 7, 2018

Welcome to offseason, where anything and everything is possible.

We've seen some expected moves—such as Marques Colston back to the Saints, Red Bryant back to the Seahawks, Brandon Carr to the Cowboys and Carlos Rogers back to the 49ers—but we've also seen some shockers and questionable decisions by both teams and players.

The biggest surprises among them? You don't have to look far.

DeSean Jackson, Eagles: Five-Year, $51 Million

The Eagles had already franchised Jackson, and reports indicated that they had no plans of working on a long-term deal with a player they couldn't completely trust.

But not only did they strike a deal, they also gave him five years.

That was far from expected for an Eagles organization that looked fed up with Jackson's antics.

He's certainly a game-breaker, but they better hope they can keep him in line.

That Reggie Wayne signed a three-year deal isn't much a surprise, but the fact that he returned to Indianapolis certainly is.

While many believed his fate was tied to Peyton Manning's, Wayne went the complete opposite direction and returned to help Andrew Luck start his career instead.

This is hardly the wrong decision, but it is one of the most surprising.

Carl Nicks, Buccaneers: Five-Year, $47.5 million

This one is surprising on two fronts. One, Nicks left for a team that is well away from competing right now. Two, the Bucs paid a guard tackle money, and that doesn't always end well.

Nicks may be the best guard in all of football, but excessively spending just because the money's available doesn't win many football games.

They got a great player, but they overpaid to get him.

Did the Bills overpay? No. Does money talk? Yes.

Mario Williams might have been held hostage for all we know until the dollar amounts came out for this deal.

Williams turned down the opportunity to visit about any team he wanted in favor of staying in Buffalo.

It is one heck of a deal, but dang if it ain't surprising to see him chase the money over a potential winner.
