Draft Grades: AFC South
Richard BowlerMay 4, 2007
AFC South
Grade: F
Best Pick: Amobi Okoye
Sleeper: Brandon Frye
Picks: (7) DT Amobi Okoye, WR Jacoby Jones, CB Fred Bennett, S Brandon Harrison, OT Brandon Frye, G Kasey Studdard, LB Zach Diles
Comments: Other than Okoye, the Texans' draft was devoid of impact players. The fact that they didn't address their offensive line until the late rounds astonishes me. After Making David Carr a scapegoat and bringing in Matt Schaub from Atlanta, protection should have been a top priority. While Okoye will form a formidable duo with Mario Williams, the Texans can't expect to win until they get guys who can block.
Grade: A+
Best Pick: Tony Ugoh
Sleeper: Roy Hall
Picks: (9) WR Anthony Gonzalez, OT Tony Ugoh, CB Daymeion Hughes, DT Quinn Pitcock, S Brannon Condren, LB Clint Sessions, WR Roy Hall, CB Michael Coe, DE Keyunta Dawson
Comments: The Colts had one of the best value drafts I have ever seen. The addition of Anthony Gonzalez in the slot will improve a team that's already won a Super bowl. They also fortified their defensive backfield, which was hit hard by free agency.
Grade: D-
Best Pick: Justin Durant
Sleeper: Josh Gattis
Picks: (11) S Reggie Nelson, LB Justin Durant, WR Mike Walker, P Adam Podesh, LB Brian Smith, OG Uche Nwaneri, S Josh Gattis, DT Derek Landri, WR Jon Broussard, LB Chad Nkang, OT Andrew Carnahan
Comments: The most banal draft of the weekend. The Jaguars started strong with Reggie Nelson and linebacker Justin Durant before going through the motions for the rest of the weekend. The best thing I can say is that you can't judge a draft class until you see the players on the field.
Grade: D
Best Pick: Paul Williams
Sleeper: Chris Davis
Picks: (9) S Michael Griffin, RB Chris Henry, WR Paul Williams, C Leroy Harris, WR Chris Davis, DL Antonio Johnson, WR Joel Filani, DE Jacob Ford, OT Mike Otto
Comments: When you look to surround a young superstar like Vince Young with talent, you don't take a safety in the first round and then an unproven running back in the second. Michael Griffin is a very good young player, but the Titans said goodbye to their starting running back and top two receivers over the winter. They should have looked to replace them with players capable of stepping in right away.
