I know it’s only been a week, and I know that the games count for absolutely nothing.

I know I should think nothing of it.

But gosh darn it, when prospects perform well in spring training it injects all sorts of “hope springs eternal” nonsense into my head.

The prospects are young and full of possibility, the season is young and full of possibility and the combination of the two makes me feverish with, ya’know, possibilities.

With every extra-base hit, I sink further into clichés about rebirth. With every diving catch, I remove another “We Believe” sign from the attic. With every radar-gun reading, I check my wall calendar for Opening Day.

So instead of adding a dour disclaimer about small sample sizes, I’m taking a moment here to engage those fantasies and embrace the warm tidings of baseball.

These young cats are playing some stellar baseball, and in doing so have become the walking, talking symbols of a new, brighter day.
