2012 NFL Draft Predictions: 5 Coaches and GMs That'll Put Their Jobs on the Line
Using your first-round pick to select a future franchise player is the ultimate goal come draft day, and anything less could warrant a loss for the coach or general manager's job.
For those teams that are on shaky ground and looking to rebuild, sometimes you have to take a risk of selecting the best player available rather than to fill position needs, and that doubles the risk.
Come draft day you can expect coaches and GMs will to their neck out on the line to try and make that franchise pick, and these are those men.
Cleveland Browns
1 of 5General Manager: Tom Heckert
Head Coach: Pat Shurmur
First-Round Picks: No. 4, No. 22
With Tom Heckert already stating that he's not going to pursue Peyton Manning or any other big-name free agent this offseason, the pressure is really on the Cleveland Browns to draft well in the first round.
Head coach Pat Shurmur went 4-12 in his first season with the Browns, and the organization needs to decide very soon if Colt McCoy is indeed their quarterback.
If he is, then the thought of Ryan Tannehill should not even cross the mind of the organization, but that still leaves this group with a difficult decision of selecting between Justin Blackmon or Trent Richardson.
Really there is no wrong choice because both prospects are already physically and mentally ready to step in and produce, but if they were to take Richardson, that would not only disallow the franchise of getting a great receiver, which it desperately needs, but it would be a slap in the face to Peyton Hillis.
The Browns won't be able to pass up on Richardson's talent, and if his production isn't anything like most project it to be, the 4-12 Seahawks, along with the front office, will have dug themselves into a deeper hole.
Past First-Round Picks: Phil Taylor ('11), Joe Haden ('10) and Alex Mack ('09)
Predicted First-Round Pick: Trent Richardson
Seattle Seahawks
2 of 5General Manager: John Schneider
Head Coach: Pete Carroll
First-Round Pick: No. 12
The Seattle Seahawks are about to do the unthinkable.
The Seahawks are so desperate to draft a quarterback that they're willing to use their No. 11 pick in the draft on a quarterback that doesn't deserve to be taken higher than the third round.
I'm sorry, but when did Ryan Tannehill become such an efficient passer? The guy played in the Big 12 (where they play no defense), and while he threw for 3,744 yards and 29 touchdowns, he also threw 15 interceptions.
Compare those stats to Robert Griffin III's 4,293 passing yards, 37 touchdowns and six interceptions, which he accounted for in the Big 12, and you'll see my point.
But the Seahawks organization is indeed that desperate, and this will be a move that both head coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider won't soon forget.
Past First-Round Picks: James Carpenter ('11), Earl Thomas ('10) and Russell Okung ('10)
Predicted First-Round Pick: Ryan Tannehill
San Diego Chargers
3 of 5General Manager: A.J Smith
Head Coach: Norv Turner
First-Round Pick: No. 18
If head coach Norv Turner isn't on the hot seat right now, I don't know what it will take to put him there.
After underachieving seasons with all of that talent and coming off of an 8-8 season, Turner might over think things come draft day.
The Chargers need an offensive tackle and should grab Mike Adams or Jonathan Martin if they're on the board, because San Diego needs to draft one of them to fill the void of Marcus McNeil.
Unfortunately for the franchise, they are having contract issues with their best receiver Vincent Jackson, and this might force their hand into drafting a Michael Floyd or Kendall Wright.
With Turner treading thin ice, he has to make the right decision and select an offensive tackle.
Past First-Round Picks: Corey Liuget ('11), Ryan Matthews ('10) and Larry English ('09)
Predicted First-Pick: Michael Floyd
Chicago Bears
4 of 5General Manager: Phil Emery
Head Coach: Lovie Smith
First-Round Pick: No. 19
What are the Chicago Bears going to do when Michael Floyd is no longer on the board?
Obviously, they are looking to add a great receiver to add to Jay Cutler and the Bears' arsenal, but when the Chargers select Floyd ahead of them, are they going to panic?
The Bears need to grab a receiver that is going to be a long-term threat, and they have to avoid future potential busts like Alshon Jeffery and Kendall Wright.
And that's why the Bears must stay calm and select Stephen Hill. If you haven't seen or heard about Hill, let me sum him up in one word—freak.
He can run the 40-yard dash in 4.3 seconds, and he has the frame of Demaryius Thomas.
Past First-Round Picks: Gabe Carimi ('11), Chris Williams ('08) and Greg Olsen ('07)
Predicted First-Round Pick: Kendall Wright
Baltimore Ravens
5 of 5General Manager: Ozzie Newman
Head Coach: John Harbaugh
First-Round Pick: No. 29
And with the 29th pick in the draft, the Baltimore Ravens select Vontaze Burfict.
Those are the words that should both excite and scare the living hell out of every Ravens fan. There's no secret that the guy has the talent to be a force in the NFL, but he lacks the discipline it takes to be a true professional.
Bringing in an ego and disruptive character like Burfict can be detrimental to a team's locker room, and though it would be nice for Ray Lewis to mentor the young linebacker, I can't see this situation ending happily ever after.
Past First-Round Picks: Jimmy Smith ('11), Michael Oher ('09) and Joe Flacco ('08)
Predicted First-Pick: Vontaze Burfict
