28 Days of 'Mania: Enough of the Name Calling, Rock and Cena Need to Wrestle

David LevinMay 31, 2018

Disclaimer: This will be an ongoing series for the next 28 days leading up to the biggest event in sports entertainment, WrestleMania 28. The idea behind the piece is to build more momentum for the event and give you, the Bleacher Report fan, a chance to read, comment and weigh in with opinions about the WWE, the business and the event. It is my hope this becomes something positive and we all enjoy the ride for the next four weeks to Miami and the biggest event of the wrestling year. Enjoy.

I am a 40 year old male who honestly is sick and tired of seeing both The Rock and John Cena call each other names, goof off in the ring, make jokes about moms and just want these two superstars to get their gear on and wrestle.

I don't think that is too much to ask of these two men, who have been trying to promote this match that was scheduled to happen a little under a year ago.

It has become a media nightmare of sorts for the WWE as it is in the final weeks before the biggest night of wrestling this year. The Rock is not as "in demand" as he used to be and the fans are still having their love-hate relationship with Cena, who is oddly enough, besting the "Most Electrifying Man in Sports Entertainment."

The vignettes last night were supposed to be "comical" but became personal and while I did not think the rap by John Cena was as bad as The Rock. And for the most part (maybe I am tired of the "grab ass" crap), Dwayne Johnson has had to try to get over with the fans more and has to resort to name calling, childish games.

I know this is the WWE, but this seems to be a bit extreme. I can only hope the match is as good as the verbal assaults. But I also know better and with this much hype for so long, it needs to be a five-star match, which in most cases it will not be.

We love a good argument in wrestling. It builds momentum. It encourages ticket sales. It brings out the masses. And with the "entertainment" value of both stars in the this match, the words could have been better.

The Rock is more "Hollywood" than WWE and John Cena is trying hard to remain true to his roots. Both have hit their mark at times, but at others, they have fallen flat. Now, with nothing left to do and a few weeks left until WrestleMania 28, there is nothing left to do.

Maybe this is bad planning on the part of the creative team. But when you have a match or event like this, you need to plan for the last second. Has the WWE failed to do that? Maybe. But what it has done is left two grown men looking more childish than others. And in the end, that may eventually hurt the matchup.
