2012 NFL Free Agents: Teams That Make Most Sense for Reggie Wayne

Matt BowenMar 12, 2012

Reggie Wayne is set to become a free agent on March 13 and will definitely make a splash in the open market.

The 33-year-old wide receiver still has plenty of gas left in the tank and will undoubtedly sign with a perceived contender.

Wayne has 11 years and 11,708 receiving yards under his belt as a member of the Indianapolis Colts, but he has undeniably played his last game with the only franchise he's ever known.

Thanks to the catastrophic 2-14 season the Colts endured in 2011, Wayne had less than 1,000 receiving yards for the first time since 2003.

Teams interested in his services shouldn't be worried about his production in the future, as Wayne is still a top-tier NFL receiver looking for another ring.

After all, with a couple more productive seasons, Wayne will ensure himself every player's dream—a spot in the Hall of Fame.

The Denver Broncos Have $43 Million to Spend on Offense

1 of 8

The Denver Broncos made the playoffs in 2011 behind a solid defense and some fourth-quarter heroics from quarterback Tim Tebow

The one thing the team needs desperately is an improved passing attack in 2012.

It's true that the Broncos led the league in rushing, but they were nearly last in passing.

Bringing in the likes of Reggie Wayne would be just what the doctor ordered in Denver.

The team has $43 million to burn, and fans had better believe the majority of that will be spent on offense.

Wayne should keep the Broncos in the back of his mind.

The Atlanta Falcons Are a Playoff Team Looking for Extra Offense

2 of 8

The Atlanta Falcons only scored two points in the 2011 NFL playoffs, and that came from a safety on defense.

The time for the Falcons could be fading fast, and acquiring the services of Reggie Wayne would quickly give the Falcons the deadliest wide receiver trio in all of football.

If Wayne were to join forces with Roddy White and Julio Jones, the Falcons would be instant Super Bowl contenders.

The team has $30-plus million dollars to spend in free agency and a top-tier NFL quarterback in Matt Ryan

If all else fails, Wayne's best bet would be to sign with Atlanta.

The Kansas City Chiefs Have Plenty of Cash to Flood Reggie Wayne's Pockets with

3 of 8

The Kansas City Chiefs have a ton of money to play with this offseason.

With a surplus of $34 million, the Chiefs can do just about anything they want.

This means that Reggie Wayne could easily become a member of the Chiefs.

With Dwayne Bowe attracting attention on the other side of the field, Wayne would thrive in Kansas City.

Another alluring thing about the Chiefs is that they are getting their best players back from injury. Matt Cassel, Jamaal Charles, Tony Moeaki and Eric Berry should all return healthy in 2012.

With plenty of money and a healthy squad, the Chiefs are in a win-win situation. Wayne should definitely consider signing with this potential contender.

The San Francisco 49ers Would Strike It Rich with Reggie Wayne

4 of 8

The San Francisco 49ers were a couple of special teams flubs away from the Super Bowl in 2011 and will be in the thick of the playoffs for years to come.

Although quarterback Alex Smith is technically a free agent at the moment, he would be stupid to leave the team that drafted him No. 1 overall in 2005.

After all, he didn't succeed in the NFL until current coach Jim Harbaugh took over the team last season.

A solid veteran receiver like Reggie Wayne is what the Niners need to get over the top.

Wayne would fit nicely into the run-heavy system that the 49ers possess. He would be all the Niners needs to keep opposing defenses off-balance.

With nearly $40 million in cap space, the 49ers would fork over the dough for Wayne's services.

The Washington Redskins Should Never Be Dismissed When Talking About Free Agents

5 of 8

The Washington Redskins now officially own the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft and will select their franchise quarterback they desperately need in Robert Griffin III.

Even better for Redskins fans, they have around $36 million in cap space to build a team around the future star.

There's nothing more that a young quarterback needs than a veteran receiver, and Reggie Wayne fits the bill.

While the Redskins may not fit Wayne's bill, one should never count out money.

With RG3 at the helm, the Redskins are now must-see TV, and Wayne could be a big reason the team would be an overnight success.

The New England Patriots Need a Deep Threat Like Reggie Wayne

6 of 8

The New England Patriots possess a future Hall of Fame quarterback in Tom Brady and a Super Bowl-caliber team.

The one thing they may be lacking on offense is a true deep threat.

Reggie Wayne could be their man come this offseason via free agency.

With over $20 million to spend, the Patriots will be calling Wayne first thing on March 13.

Whether Wayne will take the bait and head to Foxboro remains to be seen.

Imagine catching passes from Peyton Manning and Tom Brady your whole career (excluding 2011)—not bad.

The Miami Dolphins Are the Front-Runner in the Reggie Wayne Sweepstakes

7 of 8

No surprise here—Reggie Wayne went to the University of Miami and even stays in Miami in the offseason.

Sure, the Miami Dolphins finished 6-10 in 2011 and may not be the contender that Wayne is looking to play for, but they have recently undergone a face-lift on the franchise.

Who doesn't want to play in sunny Miami?

With the Dolphins revamping their coaching staff in the offseason, they will look to revamp their offense by adding Wayne in free agency.

Coupled with wide receiver Brandon Marshall, the duo would be a nightmare scenario for any opposing defense.

The best odds for landing Wayne lie with the Dolphins.

The Extra Point: Reggie Wayne Will Follow His Quarterback Peyton Manning

8 of 8

Before the 2011 NFL season, Reggie Wayne never had another starting quarterback in the NFL besides Peyton Manning.

Now both men are within hours of becoming free agents, and Wayne will follow Peyton Manning.

What team wouldn't take them in a package deal?

While it's evident that Wayne wants Manning to play in Miami, one has to believe that Wayne doesn't want to part with his quarterback.

The two men work so well together and will make whichever team they choose an instant Super Bowl contender.

Football fans everywhere can't wait for the March 13 free-agent bonanza to begin.
