WWE Wrestlemania 28: Fantasy Booking the Best Possible Undercard Matches

Drake OzJun 3, 2018

There are five matches at WrestleMania 28 that are already set in stone, and I'm really excited about four of them.

Aside from The Big Show vs. Cody Rhodes, I think that all the bouts should be good to great and give this WrestleMania the opportunity to be one of the best ones ever. But we're inching ever so close to the WWE's biggest pay-per-view of the year now, and we still don't have much of an undercard yet.

Although we have an idea of where the creative team is going with the mid-card feuds, I'm going to completely ignore that and book WrestleMania 28 myself.

I'm saying screw the likely Kane vs. Randy Orton and Team Long vs. Team Laurinaitis bouts, and instead, will book five undercard matches (four main card bouts and one dark match) that I think will make the card a lot better than it's currently shaping up to be.

Here is my fantasy booking of the WrestleMania 28 undercard.

WWE Tag Team Championship (Dark Match): The Usos vs. Epico and Primo

1 of 5

I'm completely battle royaled out.

Just over the last several months, we've had the Royal Rumble match, a 41-man battle royal on SmackDown to determine the No. 1 contender for the World Heavyweight Championship and a 10-man battle royal to determine who would face CM Punk for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 28. It's time to change things up and scrap the pre-show battle royal in favor of something that's been sorely lacking from the WWE lately: quality tag team wrestling.

While there's simply not enough time to build up a WWE Tag Team Championship feud that's worthy of a main card match, Epico and Primo have performed really well as a tag team and are deserving of the dark match at the least. Let's give them a bout against one of the few legitimate tag teams left in the WWE: the Usos.

Tag team matches can be extremely entertaining when booked right and are a nice way to get the crowd hyped up, so using one as the pre-show dark match should start WrestleMania 28 off on the right foot.

Epico and Primo seem to be pretty over as a heel tag team, and the fans often do get behind the Usos whenever they actually appear on TV. Throw these two teams in the ring together, and I think the live crowd would be pleasantly surprised.

Epico and Primo and the Usos are both, you know, legitimate tag teams. If there's not going to be any sort of tag match on the main card, at least give tag team wrestling the spotlight in the dark match.

Divas Championship: Beth Phoenix vs. Natalya vs. Kharma

2 of 5

The three most talented Divas on the WWE roster are Beth Phoenix, Natalya and Kharma. Hands down.

While everyone seems to be clamoring for a Beth vs. Kharma match, I actually think that Natalya is the best technical and overall wrestler of the bunch. I'd love to see her compete against the WWE's top two powerhouse Divas in a Triple Threat match for the WWE Divas Championship.

Given the right wrestlers, three-way dances can be a real joy to watch, and there's no doubt that Beth, Kharma and Natalya are the right Divas to pull off what could potentially be one of the best Divas match ever.

Natalya and Beth have a long history together and know each other well, while Kharma has spent most of her time in the WWE on hiatus from the company. So, when you combine the boiling animosity between Beth and Natalya (Though this doesn't actually exist right now, that's how I'd book it) and the highly anticipated in-ring return of Kharma, the ingredients are certainly there for a match for the ages.

At the very least, it would be 25 times better than anything involving Eve and Kelly Kelly.

Rey Mysterio vs. Sin Cara

3 of 5

As soon as Sin Cara (a.k.a. Mistico) signed with the WWE, the chatter began about seeing him take on Rey Mysterio in a dream match between arguably the two most popular Hispanic wrestlers in the world.

The goal of WrestleMania every year is to have a worldwide appeal, and it will no matter what. But that appeal can increase tenfold with a match as huge as a Sin Cara vs. Mysterio bout would be.

With Mysterio getting up there in age and having dealt with a ton of injuries, Sin Cara was brought into the WWE essentially to be "the next Rey Mysterio" or at least the next luchador that the WWE could turn into one of its most popular stars. While that certainly hasn't happened yet, a match between Sin Cara and Mysterio would generate a ton of interest in WrestleMania 28.

Prior to joining the WWE, Sin Cara was the biggest name in pro wrestling in Mexico and possibly the most well-known non-WWE performer on the planet. Meanwhile, Mysterio has gained a huge following in that country as well.

The amount of hype and publicity this bout would get alone is worth having it, but of course, Vince McMahon has that crazy idea of wanting to break the record for most masks worn at one event, and that match would likely help the WWE do that.

I could care less about that, but seeing two of the greatest luchadores ever is certainly something I'm interested in watching.

Randy Orton vs. Dolph Ziggler

4 of 5

Who is the best overall performer on SmackDown that is yet to find a spot on the WrestleMania 28 card? Randy Orton.

Who is the best overall performer on Raw that is yet to find a spot on the WrestleMania 28 card? Dolph Ziggler.

I think you see where I'm going here. It's absolutely ridiculous that two phenomenal superstars who worked their butts off for the WWE in 2011 (and were arguably two of the top three stars in the company that year) are either struggling to find a spot on the WrestleMania card (Ziggler) or being shoved into a match that no one cares about (Orton).

My solution: have them face each other instead.

Orton and Ziggler wrestled a number of times on TV last year, and every time they stepped into the ring together, they put on great matches within the TV time constraints. Give them more time on a bigger stage, and I am 100 percent confident that they would absolutely tear the house down.

I know Orton and Ziggler are on different brands now, but the WWE could just bill this as a "Raw vs. SmackDown" challenge or something stupid like that. I really don't care all that much, and the WWE doesn't care about the brand split anyway.

The idea with Ziggler vs. Orton is to give us a great undercard match, and quite honestly, to give Orton and Ziggler something to do.

Money in the Bank

5 of 5

Participants: The Miz, Alberto Del Rio, Wade Barrett, Zack Ryder, Kofi Kingston, Kane, Christian and Jack Swagger.

The WWE seems to be using the likely Team Long vs. Team Laurinaitis match as the bout that features a bunch of random mid-carders this year, but I think the WWE would be best-served using the Money in the Bank match for that instead.

I know that company officials are on this "Every pay-per-view has to have a gimmick" kick, but the MITB match was perfect for WrestleMania as an incredibly entertaining bout that both worked well as a show-opener and gave deserving mid-carders a chance to shine. Thus, I would have brought it back to its home in 2012.

There is a boatload of upper mid-carders and main eventers with nothing (or at least nothing important) to do at the pay-per-view this year, and throwing them all into the Money in the Bank match is a simple and easy way to solve that problem.

You put a number of reliable veterans in the match with a few up-and-comers, and then you use the veterans to help get the younger superstars over. It's really not that complicated of a process.

With the names I've mentioned above, the bout itself would probably be great, and it also provides a rising superstar with the opportunity of a lifetime: the opportunity to win the Money in the Bank briefcase on the grand stage of WrestleMania 28.

And that's a hell of a lot better than helping some guy in his 50s become the GM of both Raw and SmackDown.
