WrestleMania 28: Will WWE Gain More If John Cena or the Rock Wins Dream Match?

Tim DanielsMar 9, 2012

John Cena vs. The Rock. The Cenation vs. Team Bring It. Not only is it the most anticipated WWE match in years, but also one of the most difficult to predict. After all, Vince McMahon has to decide which result would be the best for business beyond April 1.

It's not an easy decision. Rocky will be heading back to Hollywood, or wherever his next movie shoot is, soon after WrestleMania. So, the obvious choice to emerge victorious would be Cena since he won't be leaving anytime soon.

I actually think they'd be better off going the other way, however. Letting The Rock win would open up more opportunities moving forward.

If Cena wins, there's really no direction to go. Super Cena would have defied the odds once again, which is exactly what the mainstream fans are tired of, and there would be no direct path for him to travel immediately afterward.

CM Punk and Chris Jericho are locked in their own terrific feud right now. Would it really be a good idea to break that storyline up immediately after WrestleMania just so Cena can maintain his momentum? Probably not.

It's important to remember that a lot of fans tuning in next month will be watching a WWE pay-per-view for the first time since the Attitude Era. This feud has reignited interest among those people who stopped watching over the past 10 years or so.

Should Cena defeat The Rock clean, it would weaken the entire era that Rocky represents. He's one of the biggest stars from that memorable time period in professional wrestling history.

Having him come back just to drop a match against Cena would cast a negative shadow over the entire Attitude Era. Not to mention it would alienate all of those fans who tuned in just to watch The Rock relive his glory years.

Seeing him lose wouldn't exactly get that portion of the audience to crave more WWE. And that's the ultimate goal of this entire match. It's also why other superstars like Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Undertaker and Jericho are all being featured. The WWE wants those old fans back.

At least if The Rock wins, there are multiple directions for things to move forward.

Cena's character could finally undergo a much-needed change. During his soliloquy from the stands during RAW on Monday, Cena mentioned how he would lose everything if The Rock beat him.

What happens when you lose everything? You start fresh, and that's exactly what Cena needs. His run of dominance has gone on far too long. It's time for something new. Losing to “Dwayne” would at long last allow that to happen.

It would also open up more appearances from The Rock. If he were to lose, it's hard to imagine him having any type of major WWE impact in his return. At least a victory would leave the door open in case he got the urge again.

All told, letting Rocky pick up the victory gives McMahon and Co. a better chance of success moving forward than a Cena win would. WrestleMania is setting up to be an awesome show, but the wrong main event choice could ruin everything the WWE has worked so hard to set up.

That's why The Rock must defend his home turf and show why he's the people's champ at least one more time.
