CM Punk Is the Best WWE Champion in Years

John NizinskiJun 7, 2018

The WWE has seen legends retire and leave the company lately and are in an interesting situation. The development of young talent and new stars has caused many new people to hold championship belts.

The current WWE champion is CM Punk. He could be seen as the best WWE champion in a few years.

Here are seven reasons why he is the best WWE champion in years.

Full Support of Fans

1 of 7

CM Punk is the first champion in a while that is a true fan favorite.

He won the belt from Alberto Del Rio who is a heel. Del Rio was given as many opportunities as you can get and was disappointing. He actually held the belt twice.

John Cena held it before his first and second title run. Cena is a babyface but draws a mixed reaction from the fans.

Other superstars who have held the belt recently were the Miz and Rey Mysterio. Mysterio did win the championship but also lost it on the same night.

Punk is the first champion in a while that is supported by basically every WWE fan.

Having a Long Title Run

CM Punk started his current WWE title run on November 20, 2011. That means that he has held the belt for over 100 days. The last person to hold the WWE Championship for over 100 days was the Miz and before that was Triple H in 2008.

Lately, the WWE Championship belt has been passed around many different superstars and hasn't been held for a significant period of time. It made winning the belt more impressive of an achievement when it was held by superstars for a longer period of time.

Punk's long title run gives the WWE Championship more credibility.

He Is Good on the Mic

Many times, WWE superstars will fail to move up in the company because they are unable to put together both their in-ring skills and their mic skills.

CM Punk has put them both together and can compete with anybody on the mic. His "pipe-bombs" were much of the reason for him becoming the WWE champion in the first place.

He Is Good in the Ring

One of the things that made Bret Hart one of the greatest WWE superstars of all time was that he was a technician in the ring. CM Punk has that similar quality because of his ability in the ring.

Punk is one of the best superstars in the business when it comes to pure wrestling talent. John Cena is often criticized because of his wrestling limitations in the ring. Punk does not seem to have many limitations and consistently puts on quality matches.

Clawed His Way to the Top

There is something that is always intriguing about an underdog who earns his success.

CM Punk started in the Independent Circuit and moved on to Ring of Honor and TNA.

He eventually was given a shot with the WWE but in the ECW brand. He became one of the best young superstars in the company. He slowly worked his way up the company until he won the WWE Championship.

Antihero

Arguably the most popular WWE superstar of all time is Stone Cold Steve Austin. He became so popular because of his antihero tactics and style. The fans loved that he stood up to Vince McMahon and didn't care about the consequences.

We have seen a similar thing from CM Punk, and it has helped him become WWE champion. This antihero persona has given the WWE Championship new life.

Facing New Opponents

When you think of the WWE Championship, you think of John Cena.

He has been the "Golden Boy" and the face of the WWE lately. He always seemed to be in the WWE Championship picture, whether he held it or was competing for it. However, he is preoccupied with his feud with The Rock, which has given different superstars a chance at the title.

It is refreshing to see new faces competing for the WWE Championship. This will help the company long term, as they try to develop main event caliber superstars.

Punk has feuded with Dolph Ziggler who was given a nice push and responded well to it. He is currently in a rivalry with Chris Jericho. While Jericho is in no way a new face, he has been out of the company for a few years, and it is nice to have him back competing for the WWE Championship. Even Kofi Kingston was given a shot at the title at the Elimination Chamber.
