2012 NFL Draft: Rams Dreaming of a Ludicrous Haul for No. 2 Pick
The power of holding the second pick in the upcoming NFL draft has gone to the head of the St. Louis Rams' GM and has him partaking in a bit of fantastical thinking.
St. Louis is in a nice position. There is no denying that. There are two elite QB prospects in this draft. The Colts appear to be locks to take Andrew Luck No. 1 overall.
That leaves the rest of the QB-starved teams scrambling to get a shot to select the second elite prospect, Robert Griffin III.
With QB Sam Bradford getting ready to enter his third season, the Rams are not looking to draft a QB, but they are willing to trade the pick so someone else can. And it is that scenario that has the Rams thinking a little funny.
NFL.com's Rich Eisen shed a little light on the Rams' delusions of draft value grandeur:
"Just had chat with Rams GM Les Snead. Sure sounded like he wants 3 first-rounders for #2 pick. Podcast will post later iTunes/NFL.com
— Rich Eisen (@richeisen) March 6, 2012"
Holy Herschel Walker trade! The Rams are not going to get three first-rounders for the rights to draft Griffin. Two is a much more realistic outlook.
Why the Rams are Dreaming
There is not a team in the league that desperate to get their hands on Griffin. There are other options out there in free agency, like Peyton Manning, Matt Flynn and Jason Campbell.
There are also other QBs in the draft, like Ryan Tannehill, Brock Osweiler and Brandon Weeden.
While these prospects don't have the same appeal as Griffin, they look much more appealing when considering that teams won't have to give up two additional first-round picks to get them.
Of course, it is possible that this is merely a negotiating ploy. They could be leaking this information to show that they aren't going to give up this pick unless they get a king's ransom in an effort to drive up the price.
Rams fans should certainly hope that is the case, because the other scenario shows a GM that is wildly out of touch with reality.
