2012 NFL Mock Draft: Mocking Need Picks for Every AFC East Team, Round 4
No NFL team wants to miss their first-round pick, but every team hopes to find late-round steals in the NFL draft.
You can get a first-round mock draft anywhere, but which players should your team target in later rounds? Here are my thoughts on some prospects to watch for each team in the fourth round of the draft.
With the 2012 NFL draft on April 26, we will look at some solid prospects that fill needs for each AFC East team in each round of the draft, from now until the real thing. This is the fourth-round edition. Check back at the AFC East blog for updates and more rounds each week leading up to the draft.
New England Patriots
Needs: DE, DT, OLB, DB, WR
The pick: DeQuan Menzie, Cornerback, Alabama
Nick Saban. Bill Belichick. Pipeline. Now that that's out of the way, it's rather obvious why the Patriots would make this pick. They have classically valued defensive backs at all points of the draft, but especially with high picks.
They just used a first-round pick on Devin McCourty in 2010, and though they aren't desperately in need of top-flight talent at the position with McCourty, Kyle Arrington and Ras-I Dowling set for significant time in 2012, they would love to have depth—as evidenced by the revolving door that spun all season at the position.
As seen in the video, Menzie is capable of playing inside and outside, which should earn some big-time bonus points for him while Belichick is putting together his big board.
New York Jets
Needs: OLB, WR, RT, S
The pick: Brandon Mosley, Offensive Tackle, Auburn
Tackle may be one of the most valuable positions on the roster, but it may be one of the most overvalued positions in the NFL draft. With so many of them coming off the board early, the well could dry up rather quickly, but there could be some good finds in mid rounds.
One of the most important features a tackle can have is quick feet. This is especially true in today's NFL, where agile and speedy edge rushers reign supreme on defense. Mosley started out as a tight end and moved to tackle later on.
Mosley's massive 6'5.5", 314-pound frame and high upside will make him a coveted tackle in the middle rounds of the draft.
Buffalo Bills
Needs: OLB, DE, DB, WR
The pick: Tommy Streeter, Wide Receiver, Miami
After extending wide receiver Stevie Johnson to a five-year, $36.5 million deal on Monday, the Buffalo Bills are still in the market for a wide receiver. Having just tied up so much money at the position, though, they'd probably like to find their other wide receiver a bit cheaper than Johnson.
At 6'4" and 215 pounds with 4.4 speed, Streeter has all the physical tools you look for in a wide receiver. The problem is whether or not those tools translate into skills on the field. According to Wes Bunting of National Football Post, he didn't play that fast all the time and had a hard time beating press coverage.
There's a bit that remains uncertain about Streeter as a prospect, but if there's one thing you can bank on with him, it's that he will provide a red-zone threat that the Bills currently lack.
Miami Dolphins
Needs: QB, OL, DB
The pick: Aaron Henry, Safety, Wisconsin
For a defense that performed so well down the stretch, it's surprising how many holes the Dolphins have to fill. Their secondary was suspect throughout 2011, and the best thing they can do is at least bring in some young depth to compete for starting jobs.
Henry started out at cornerback but made the switch to safety after missing significant time with an ACL injury. That history makes him one of the rare safeties who can cover in man coverage, an asset which will be incredibly valuable to him in the AFC East lining up against Jets tight end Dustin Keller, Patriots tight ends Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski and Bills tight end Scott Chandler.
Henry acclimated very well to his new position and grabbed four interceptions in his senior year. That he is still so new to the position would suggest that he can still grow there.
