WWE News: Possible Spoiler on WrestleMania WWE Championship Match?

Michael PrunkaJun 7, 2018

Dirt sheets have been critical of live event advertisements, claiming that advertisements naming CM Punk as the WWE Champion are spoilers for the WrestleMania main event match between him and Chris Jericho.

The latest of these advertisements, as reported by WrestlingInc.com, was seen in Huntsville, Alabama markets. The commercials for this Raw live event advertised CM Punk defending his WWE Championship against Dolph Ziggler in a two out of three falls match.

There is a chance that these advertisements could indicate the WWE’s post-WrestleMania plans. Perhaps the dirt sheets should also report that, due to his lack of presence in the advertisements, Chris Jericho won’t have much post-WrestleMania involvement.

As we’ve seen countless times, local show advertisements can change with ease. Take, for example, the fact that Undertaker was pulled from the TD Garden’s ads for this past edition of Raw less than a week before the show. Plans can change and so can the local ads for a show. In this case, the advertisement could be an indicator of what the original plan was.

In this specific case, I personally believe that many dirt sheet operators and readers are failing to consider the alternative when labeling these advertisements as spoilers. When advertising CM Punk as WWE Champion at future events, I always recognize that this assumes he is still champion by this future event.

If they were to advertise Chris Jericho as WWE Champion at this live event in Huntsville, Alabama, that would be a much more definitive spoiler. As opposed to thinking that the WWE is advertising CM Punk as champion simply because he is the current champion, one would recognize that advertising someone else as champion for a future event would indicate plans for said person to be champion in the future.

It is common knowledge that all local advertisements for WWE shows are subject to change. There are many big assumptions made when claiming that advertising CM Punk as WWE Champion for a live event on May 4 spoils the outcome of his WrestleMania bout. At best, the advertisements should be reported as a loose and volatile idea of the WWE’s future plans.
