Dallas Cowboys 2012 Mock Draft: Buying or Selling Matt Miller's Latest Picks

Jason HenryMar 1, 2012

Let us mock. The Dallas Cowboys have the draft of the decade approaching in April and Bleacher Report columnist Matt Miller has charted all seven picks for Dallas. That draft of a lifetime is true, just listen to my explanation.

Dallas is still half a roster of players away from winning a Super Bowl, would you agree? The team needs help in the secondary, offensive line, linebacker position and the defensive line. And those are just the critical positions.

If Dallas fails to draft any players that will depth and value to their team, it will be time to blow up the Cowboys as they are currently constructed. They have a grand chance at getting better via the draft and free agency. If they do not, then I stand by saying that this team will never win a title. The 2012 draft is just that important.

So before I get to far into my reasoning, let's play a quick game of buy or sell. Do we think Mr. Miller's picks are good or bad.

1st Round: Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina Selling

1 of 7

Gilmore’s name may not register for some fans as he’s not on the “radar” yet. But I believe he has the skill set to make a very good NFL cornerback and some team will turn out happy if they pick him.

Just not the Dallas Cowboys.

Miller has Alabama corner Dre Kirkpatrick slipping all the way to the second round, and I stand to think that he will not make it past the first twenty picks. Kirkpatrick is a great corner who can contribute immediately and Dallas would be foolish to let him go by.

He also makes a good point about Dallas passing on Janoris Jenkins.

"

“Janoris Jenkins (North Alabama) may be the more popular pick, but throwing a rookie with multiple arrests and four kids under the age of three into a locker room lacking an authority figure is a horrible idea for all involved.”

"

2nd Round: Mark Barron, SS, Alabama Push

2 of 7

Here is why I say push on this pick. Depending on where Dallas goes in the first round will determine if they chose to go secondary again in the second round. Barron is a great player with a nice upside, but I believe team owner Jerry Jones wants an offensive lineman early.

I also believe that Barron falling this low is a little off, but I'm not a scout expert either. If some mocks are true in picking a guard in the first round for Dallas, then yes, the Cowboys will most definitely go defensive backfield. If it's a corner, which is the direction I see them taking, then offensive line is the second round pick.

3rd Round: Jake Bequette, OLB, Arkansas Selling

3 of 7

Bequette is a defensive lineman by trade, but he was worked out as an outside linebacker at the Senior Bowl. I say a big no on this one as there will be a learning curb for him and Dallas can has other choices at ILB at this pick.

Bequette can play the 3-4 and may be pretty fluid at Sam linebacker. But I don't think that the Cowboys will go in this direction because it just does not seem to be a great fit.

4th Round: Aaron Henry, FS, Wisconsin Selling

4 of 7

I'm selling this one because Matt has Dallas choosing no offensive lineman so far, opting for nothing but defensive players.

Henry is a good player and the Cowboys could actually stand a player with his skill and athletic ability. But the team needs offensive line help and picking Henry here would be a disaster because nothing would seem to flow.

5th Round: Cory Harkey, TE, UCLA Selling

5 of 7

Harkey ran a 5.11 in the 40-yard dash and only benched 13 reps. The Cowboys aren't looking for a burner at tight end, but it took him well over five seconds to run forty yards. Harkey's combine performance is straight out of the 90's, not 2012.

Dallas needs help at tight end as Martellus Bennett is not a good second option. However, Harkey is not the answer.

6th Round: Devon Wylie, WR, Fresno State Selling

6 of 7

Wylie is a fast kid. He ran a 4.39 in the 40 at the combine and impressed plenty of scouts. The inevitable comparison to that of Wes Welker is coming because Wylie is a white guy. But comparison notwithstanding, he can play some football. He also has a similar build to that of Welker, standing 5'6" and weighing less than 200 pounds.

If Dallas fails to re-sign Laurent Robinson, and the chances are greater than 40 percent, Wylie may be a good choice. He caught the ball well at the combine and show great athleticism. But Dallas needs help in other areas and Miller has still failed to give Dallas an offensive lineman.

As much as I like Wylie, I'm going to sell.

7th Round: Nicolas Jean-Baptiste, NT, Baylor Buying

7 of 7

While he's no offensive guard, he is a big, burly nose tackle how can move the line of scrimmage. He's 335 pounds and would give Dallas the opportunity to move current nose tackle Jay Ratliff to defensive end.

My only worry is that they may be able to grab him or another nose tackle in free agency. I'm not really a big fan of this draft for Dallas if they were to go down this road. There was no pick for inside linebacker, offensive guard, or back-up quarterback.

I'm going to buy, but reluctantly.
