LeBron: Does the Addition of a Prince Hurt More Than the Loss of a King?

Paul ShaiaJun 7, 2018

The Cavs are usually on the back burner of Cleveland fans' minds. Both the Browns and Indians take precedent over the Cavaliers currently.

Even while the Cavs had King James, as LeBron James was referred to by Cleveland's, the Cavs still came third in popularity—maybe even fourth if you include Ohio State football.

The Browns and Indians combined for one playoff visit during LeBron’s tenure in Cleveland, which was the Indians shocking run at the ALCS in 2007.

Perhaps that is why he “took his talents to South Beach,” or why he made a commercial about playing for the Browns.

Being from the Cleveland area, LeBron understood the fan loyalty there. No matter how bad the Indians are, baseball comes ahead of basketball to Cleveland fans—no matter how bad or frustrating they are throughout the years.

With this being said, LeBron’s “decision” devastated the entire city of Cleveland.

Yes! The entire city!

Cleveland’s third favorite team is cheered for and loved more than most cities' favorite team. This brings us to the Indians and a Prince.

Cleveland made a surprise run at a division championship last season and erased much of the fan sorrow created by the LeBron departure.

The lockout in the NBA also helped.

The Tribe eventually was hurt by the injury bug, and the Tigers went on to have a strong run in the final weeks to claim the division title.

This offseason, the Tribe added plenty of depth to correct that very problem. Everything was shaping up to be a great division race once again. Then former Cleveland fan-favorite turned Tiger, Victor Martinez went down with an unfortunate ACL tear and ended his season.

At this point the Tribe may have been considered division favorites. Then news came a week later that changed all that.

Tigers added a Prince. Oh no!

The poor me feeling that had finally left after two years since LeBron’s departure, instantaneously came back to Cleveland fans.

All of a sudden the owner wasn't spending enough to make a serious run at a championship and there was no chance of a Cleveland team ever winning a championship again.

All because of a Prince. Funny how ironic sports can be at times.

The season has just begun and the injuries are piling up for the Tribe. Negative thoughts bringing negative actions, perhaps, but the front office assured there would be viable replacements.

The Indians will be a quality team this season, whether or not they win the division is yet to be seen.

The Cavs are winning games and rookie Kyrie Irving is helping ease the pain for Cavs' fans. They are not up to par with LeBron and Dwyane Wade’s Heat, but the Cavs are headed on a positive path and fans are responding.

Whether or not the Tiger’s adding a Prince hurts more than the Cavs losing a King, is yet to be seen.

Both the Cavs and Indians are headed in a positive direction and should be embraced because right now the Browns are the joker.
