Andy Pettitte Considering the Astros?

Kevin RozellJan 8, 2009

(Zell's Pinstripe Blog)

Now that Andy has rejected the Yankees $10M offer, he is thinking about whether or not he has other options. The Astros can certainly be one of them because his family is in Texas.

Andy is also very good friends with Houston Astros pitcher, Roy Oswalt. Baseball people thought that a deal with the Yankees was inevitable, but things have fallen apart since then. Andy doesn’t want to take a pay cut, and the Yankees won’t budge.

Pettitte came up through the Yankees farm system and is a very popular player here in NY. I bet he feels like he got a low-ball offer because there are a lot of bad pitchers out there that make close to $10M.

I don’t blame him for that, but he has already made his money. He said that he wanted to play in the new Yankee Stadium and has expressed a lot of interest in playing for them in ‘09. What’s stopping him? Money.

Is Pettitte’s legacy going to be ruined over a few bucks? In the end, it will probably come down to the Yankees or Astros. Anything can happen now, so we will have to wait and see.

Reasons why Andy is unhappy with the Yankees:

The 36-year-old’s grievances with the Yankees feature, most prominently, these three sentiments, according to people familiar with his thinking:

"

1. Pettitte believes that the Yankees should display more appreciation for all that he has done for them.

2. While the Yankees are asking that Pettitte take a pay cut, the team clearly is not hurting financially, given its large investments in Teixeira, CC Sabathia, and A.J. Burnett.

3. Pettitte thinks that his 2008 season wasn’t as bad as the Yankees are making it out to be.

"

Here are a few more updates…

"

Jon Heyman chimes in with a few notes on the Yankees…

  • Heyman confirms that the Yankees are accepting trade offers for Xavier Nady and Nick Swisher.
  • The Yankees have “no way to trade” Hideki Matsui, noting that he is coming off a knee surgery and has a full no-trade clause.
  • Heyman also says the Yankees will not trade Johnny Damon saying the team needs him to leadoff and play center field.
"

MASN Online reports: The Orioles have no interest in Shelley Duncan, who was designated for assignment by the Yankees on Wednesday.
