Wrestlemania 28: What's Left with Top 4 Matches Set in Stone?
WrestleMania is always billed as the WWE's biggest pay-per-view of the year, but in 2012, it actually will be.
The card for this year's show in Miami is absolutely loaded, with four stellar matches that should give every type of wrestling fan something they want to see.
The Rock vs. John Cena will appeal to fans who love that big-match feeling, Triple H vs. The Undertaker is going to be wildly entertaining for anyone who loves gimmick matches. Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus could be pure gold, and Chris Jericho vs. CM Punk might be one of the best WWE Championship matches we've gotten at Mania in quite some time.
I certainly cannot wait to see those matches, but I am also anxious to see how the WWE fills out the rest of the PPV.
We should get eight to 10 matches at the show, so let's take a look at what bouts could round out the remainder of the WrestleMania 28 card.
Note: The following article contains some major ***SPOILERS*** from Tuesday's SmackDown tapings, so be forewarned!
Randy Orton vs. Kane
1 of 6Ugh. Is this really the best match they could find for Randy Orton?
Apparently so.
At Tuesday's SmackDown tapings, Kane interrupted Orton's match against Daniel Bryan by attacking "The Viper," leading me to believe that we'll see these two collide in a match at WrestleMania 28.
After Orton's stellar 2011, I would have loved to see him in a more high-profile match at Mania, but this match might actually not be that bad.
Orton and Kane faced off in a pretty good Street Fight last summer, a bout that was much better than Kane's Ambulance Match with John Cena at Elimination Chamber.
I don't think Kane and Orton will get a whole lot of time on the show (probably eight minutes or so), but it could be an OK match if it's contested under No Disqualification rules or something along those lines.
I guess Kane's just going to completely move on from his storyline with Zack Ryder without any real explanation, though. Oh well.
If he's not gonna be in the World Heavyweight Championship match, Orton needs someone to face, and Kane's one of only a few options the WWE has.
WWE Tag Team Championship: Epico and Primo vs. R-Truth and Kofi Kingston
2 of 6Epico and Primo were able to successfully defend their WWE Tag Team Championship in a Triple Threat match on Monday's Raw after Epico got the pin on Jack Swagger.
In my book, that means Swagger and Dolph Ziggler are probably done as tag-team title contenders.
But since neither Kofi Kingston nor R-Truth was pinned during the bout, I'm thinking the creative team will find a way to get them another tag-team title shot.
Truth and Kingston have been working as a team for the past few weeks, and Epico and Primo are going to need to have some sort of contenders for their tag titles.
The Kingston/Truth duo is the best babyface opponent for them at the moment, so I'd bet on seeing that feud continue with these two teams facing off in a short match for the tag-team titles at WrestleMania 28.
I really enjoyed the Triple Threat match on Raw, though, so—especially if Swagger doesn't have a singles match—I wouldn't mind seeing another tag-team title match between these three teams in Miami.
Heck, maybe even make it a Ladder match to give the fans some added interest in the bout.
Winner Controls Both Shows: Team Long vs. Team Laurinaitis
3 of 6This match may not have been announced yet, but I think we all know it's happening.
According to WrestlingInc.com, that is indeed the plan:
"The John Laurinaitis-Teddy Long feud is currently slated to lead to some sort of match at WrestleMania, likely a tag-team match featuring a team headed by Laurinaitis and David Otunga to face one headed by Long and Santino Marella.
"
This is what I see going down as well.
Santino Marella and David Otunga have been more involved in the feud between John Laurinaitis and Teddy Long than any other superstars, so it's not surprising that they'll be the "leaders" of Team Long and Team Laurinaitis, respectively.
Ultimately, I think we'll see either a three-on-three or a four-on-four match between the two sides, with names like Christian, Alberto Del Rio and Mark Henry as likely candidates for the heel squad and guys like Kofi Kingston and R-Truth on the babyface team.
I would rather have seen the return of the Money in the Bank match, but that doesn't even appear to be an option anymore.
Plus, I think it's time for the Teddy Long TV character to go, and I'm almost certain that's what will happen when Team Laurinaitis wins at WrestleMania 28.
WWE Divas Championship: Beth Phoenix vs. ?????
4 of 6There's been no build whatsoever to any sort of Divas feud, so predicting any type of Divas Championship match at WrestleMania 28 would be pure speculation.
The three potential opponents for Beth Phoenix that fans seem to be talking about the most are Kharma, Natalya and Trish Stratus.
Realistically, though, I don't think we're going to see any of those matches at Mania, because the pay-per-view is getting so close and there's been nothing to indicate that these bouts could happen.
Even if Beth does find an opponent, the Divas will probably be relegated to a dark match anyway.
Intercontinental Championship: The Big Show vs. Cody Rhodes
5 of 6Well, here's yet another match that I'm not exactly thrilled about.
On this Friday's SmackDown, GM Teddy Long will announce that Cody Rhodes is set to defend his Intercontinental Championship against The Big Show at WrestleMania 28.
On the bright side, the Intercontinental title will be defended at Mania for a change.
On the not-so-bright side, it's still Big Show vs. Cody Rhodes.
I'm a huge Rhodes fan and have always liked Show, but we've already seen these two feud in the past. It wasn't good then, and it won't be good now.
Although I like the way Rhodes is mentioning Big Show's past failures at WrestleMania, I think there'd be more interest in a Rhodes family feud between Cody and Goldust or even in a bout between Cody and some other up-and-coming mid-carder.
The Big Show has played a huge part on SmackDown for the last several months, and though I realize some of that is due to injuries, it's time to build up the future of the WWE.
Rhodes will be a major player in the company for the next 10 years, and given the creative team's refusal to stop pushing Show down our throats, I'm worried we'll see Rhodes lose at Mania when he should be winning.
Plus, I can't say I'm expecting that great of a match here. It'll be decent at best.
United States Title: Zack Ryder (w/Kelly Kelly) vs. Jack Swagger (w/Eve)
6 of 6I'm just taking a shot in the dark here, but since it looks like Kane is moving on to a feud with Randy Orton, Zack Ryder is going to need something to do at WrestleMania 28.
I say, why not give him his United States Championship rematch against Jack Swagger and throw Eve and Kelly Kelly in there to get them on the card?
Eve has engaged in an intense Twitter war with Kelly Kelly since turning heel, and rumor has it that the creative team plans to pair Ryder with a face Diva for a feud against Eve and a heel superstar.
Sounds like a perfect situation to me.
Either you have a mixed tag-team match featuring K2 and Ryder taking on Eve and Swagger, or you simply have Eve in Swagger's corner and Kelly Kelly in Ryder's corner for a US title match at Mania.
Ryder's going to get a match at the pay-per-view. Otherwise, all this TV time he's taken up for the last few months would have been pointless.
So, I think Ryder will return soon, target Swagger and the United States Championship, and then the creative team will have Eve and Kelly Kelly involved to continue their feud as well.
Bank on it!
