NFL Combine 2012: Andrew Luck Still No. 1 Despite Overwhelming Love for RG3
All the excitement out of Indianapolis and the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine has to do with Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III and whether or not he's got enough to go No. 1 overall.
He blazed through every workout, shined in the interview room and was always smiling every time the camera found his face. Not a fake, for media purposes smile either, a genuine smile that caught attention everywhere he went.
RG3 deserves the praise he is receiving, but it's still not enough to supplant Andrew Luck as the No. 1 overall pick come April.
The Stanford quarterback was overshadowed by the Baylor QB's performance, but Luck's wasn't much less impressive.
He showed elite athleticism for a prospect his size and put up comparable numbers to Cam Newton last year. Without Griffin's track-star speed, Luck would have been the talk of the combine instead.
It has been said for months now, at least from my end, that Luck has nowhere to go but down. He's been the draft's top player two years running. More than anything, people are excited by something new like RG3 and possibly even tired of hearing about Luck.
But NFL teams aren't. NFL GMs and coaches aren't tired of Luck at all. In fact, they've been waiting for him for a while now.
At 6'4", 234 pounds, he's the prototypical size with above average athleticism and the intangibles that cannot be coached. Luck's the best quarterback prospect since, not even Peyton Manning, but John Elway all the back in 1983.
RG3's one heck of a quarterback with elite athleticism, but Luck is in a class of his own. One workout isn't going to change that, and come April it will be his name announced first at Radio City Music Hall, not Robert Griffin III's.
