NFL Draft 2012: Teams with Best Odds to Land Robert Griffin at No. 2 Spot
With the NFL scouting combine nearing its completion, much of the talk regarding the NFL draft has centered on Baylor's Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Robert Griffin III, who put on a show in Indianapolis. Seeing as the St. Louis Rams hold the draft's No. 2 overall pick, a trade seems very likely.
All signs point to the Indianapolis Colts going with Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck first, but Griffin is clearly the next best prospect. With former No. 1 overall pick Sam Bradford in the fold, the Rams have no need for RG3 and would be best served trading down a couple slots and stockpiling picks.
According to ESPN's John Clayton, there are only two teams with a realistic shot at meeting what looks to be a lofty asking price from the Rams front office. Whatever the case, it looks like there is going to be a major shakeup near the top of the draft at some point ahead of the April 26 draft.
Here are the teams with the best odds of nabbing Griffin with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft.
Cleveland Browns
At pick No. 4, the Cleveland Browns are the first team on the board that could potentially take Griffin. The Colts are locks to select Luck, while the Rams already have Bradford and the Minnesota Vikings, who are picking third, have second-year signal-caller Christian Ponder.
Cleveland suffered through a season with the overmatched Colt McCoy under center, and while the fair thing to do may be to give him another year to prove himself, there's nothing fair about the NFL.
Griffin could very well be a generational talent. His 4.41-second time in the 40-yard dash was the second-fastest ever by a quarterback, but Griffin isn't simply a runner. As a collegiate player, he proved to be a very accurate passer with a strong arm as well, so he looks to be the total package.
In a division with strong defenses like the Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals, the Browns need an offensive player who can be an equalizer, and RG3 would be precisely that.
Washington Redskins
The Washington Redskins are currently sitting in no-man's land with the No. 6 overall pick. Seeing as the 'Skins roster has Rex Grossman and John Beck at the quarterback position, it's quite obvious that they're in dire need of a gunslinger.
Sixth is far too late to land Luck or Griffin, but it's also too early to reach for somebody like Texas A&M's Ryan Tannehill. With that in mind, Washington's only options are to trade up to No. 2 or to forgo a quarterback completely.
One luxury Washington has that Cleveland doesn't is the potential to sign Colts legend Peyton Manning. If Manning is cut by the Colts to avoid having to pay him his ample roster bonus as expected, the Redskins will be one of the major players as owner Dan Snyder has money to burn. Trading up for Griffin may be preferred since it's a long-term solution, but it's going to take more for Washington to do that than it will Cleveland.
Miami Dolphins
Clayton may think that only the Browns and Redskins have a shot at Griffin, but the Miami Dolphins have to be considered the dark horse. With the eighth-overall pick, it will likely take a ton for Miami to jump all the way up to No. 2, but it isn't an impossibility.
The New Orleans Saints once gave up their entire draft to select running back Ricky Williams, so if the Dolphins want RG3 bad enough, then they certainly have the means to make it happen.
Like Washington, though, Miami has options. Manning is very much on the Dolphins' radar, and from all accounts, there is interest from both sides.
Failing that, however, the Dolphins appear to be the heavy favorites to land former Green Bay Packers backup Matt Flynn in free agency. The fit is obvious since Miami's new head coach is Joe Philbin, who just so happened to be Green Bay's offensive coordinator. Those choices make a trade up for Griffin unlikely, but not out of the question.
