NFL Combine 2012 Results: Winners and Losers from the Weekend

Wes ODonnellFeb 28, 2012

The NFL's biggest job interview has gone as quickly as it came. One group of players, the defensive backs, remain in Indianapolis and they'll be back home before the night falls.

They still have to workout though.

Everybody else—quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, tight ends, offensive and defensive lineman, linebackers and specialists—are all recovering from what was a whirlwind week that they'll never forget.

Some players made lasting impressions, some added more question marks and some completely disappointed—the winners and losers both stood out.

Winners

Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor

His unofficial 40-yard dash time of 4.38 sent people off their rocker for a minute. While some expecting tremendous numbers tempered their excitement, others simply couldn't contain themselves.

As we've predicted for quite some time, RG3 has put himself firmly in position to be selected No. 2 overall.

There is even talk of him going No. 1 (which is ridiculous because Andrew Luck is a different level of prospect) and there is no denying that is what he wants.

RG3's meteoric rise up drafts continued as expected.

St. Louis Rams, No. 2 Overall Pick

Because of RG3's brilliance, the Rams will be able to turn the No. 2 pick in this year's draft into a bounty of picks and likely still find the player they want most.

Reports already claim that Rams have decided to trade the pick for what they hope is a deal similar to what the Chargers got for Eli Manning in 2004.

With Sam Bradford around for the long haul, the Rams' best choice is get out of the way of the RG3 race and it appears they plan to do just that.

Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis

The big man from Memphis nearly forced Warren Sapp to tears with excitement and tongue-tied Mike Mayock more than a few times during his workout.

At 346 pounds, the draft's premier nose tackle shocked people with an impressive display of athleticism for a man of his stature.

He not only solidified his stock as a first-round pick with a sub-five 40-yard dash, but possibly entered the top 20 if teams like what they see when they go back to the tape.

Stephen Hill, WR, Georgia Tech

Hill's 4.36 40-yard dash at 6'4", 215, has many people thinking of a mix between Calvin Johnson and Demaryius Thomas, two former Yellow Jackets receivers with a rare combination of top-end speed and size.

His numbers are nothing like Calvin's, but like Demaryius he was a serious big-play threat in a triple-option offense.

We know how enticing speed is for some teams and although he's a developmental project, he certainly earned himself some money this weekend.

Losers

Vontaze Burfict, LB, Arizona State

Ridiculously slow 40-time aside, Burfict did his questionable character no favors this weekend in Indy.

He clocked in a 4.93 and 5.10 in the 40-yard dash, then went and sat near the medical table with is iPod on. All this came after he declared himself the best linebacker in the draft while blaming his coaches for "messing him up" while at ASU.

All of that is utterly ridiculous. The kid has more growing up to do than Toys "R" Us' Geoffrey Giraffe.

Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama

Speaking of kids, Janoris Jenkins went all George Washington in the media portion and told teams that he has four kids and three arrests at the age of 23.

Honesty certainly is the best policy, and teams would've found out this information either way, but it still doesn't do Jenkins much good.

He claims to have matured since his dismissal from the Florida program, and he will workout and likely shine on the field today, but the truth has already done him some damage.

Courtney Upshaw, DE/OLB, Alabama

The BCS Championship Game's defensive MVP didn't do too much damage to himself, but he did put more pressure on his pro day workout and was slightly underwhelming in comparison to his peers.

He didn't find a way into the top five of any event and still now must run his 40 in Tuscaloosa with all eyes on him.

Upshaw had so much momentum carried over from the title game and through Senior Bowl week that this shouldn't hurt him too much, but it will cause to teams to question whether or not he's a potential top 10-12 pick. Melvin Ingram's impressive numbers don't help Upshaw at all either.
