WWE Tag Teams: Why They Need More Loose Affiliations Like Ziggler and Swagger

The Doctor Chris MuellerJun 7, 2018

The WWE tag team division is under constant fire for being booked weak and never given any time by management.

Right now there are basically two real teams: The Usos and Epico and Primo, with some other pairings being featured on WWE's lower shows.

Ziggler and Swagger have a unique arrangement for WWE these days. They aren't really a tag team, but they're not, not a tag team, either.

They have had title shots on PPV and have spent weeks, even months apart while pursuing singles runs. They recently faced Truth and Kofi on SmackDown and got the win.

Being under the managerial services of Vickie makes them affiliated even if they never started out that way, but over the last several months they have proven that you don't always need to be in tag matches to be a team.

WWE should take this concept and apply it to other people who have loose affiliations with each other. Some people already have a history teaming with other superstars, so giving them the occasional match together and then not following it up with a tag team push would not be such a bad idea.

Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre were short-term tag champs who are both still heels. Just because they are in separate programs does not mean you can't take them once in awhile and put them against a normal tag team.

WWE has a problem keeping every storyline going week after week; this concept would give them the chance to put a feud on the back burner for a week and focus on something else before coming back to it.

A trend that has grown in recent years is WWE taking two people, lumping them together and then having one turn on the other to break up the team.

My question is, why do we have to break up every team? Many times in the past we have seen tag team wrestlers hold singles titles while still in a team; it is not as if this hasn't worked before.

One major example of WWE dropping the ball is the breakup of the Hart Dynasty and subsequent release of Harry Smith.

There was no real reason to break them up and after they were apart, neither man received any kind of push, which left fans wondering why a popular team had been dismantled and scrapped like an old Ford Galaxy.

I would love to see Kofi and Punk pair back up to revive their short-lived tag team, even if it is only once every couple months while Punk is still WWE champion.

With all the criticism WWE gets for never pushing its tag teams—or its divas—you would think they could come up with more than two or three teams to keep us entertained.

A decade ago, the tag team division was regularly stealing the show; now it is lucky if they are even on the show.

I am not trying to criticize, I am trying to come up with ideas on how things can be improved.

What do you think WWE could do to make the tag team division better again?
