WWE News: Drew McIntyre Becomes the Latest Victim of a Ridiculous Gimmick

John AtkinsJun 4, 2018

Drew McIntyre's gradual fall from grace in the WWE has taken an interesting "turn," as the formerly Sinister Scotsman now appears to be heading for a change in character.

At a Smackdown live event in Honduras this weekend, McIntyre was said to have debuted his new "Arrogant Playboy" gimmick before (and during) a match with Ezekiel Jackson.

According to Marc Middleton of LordsofPain.net, "Drew appeared to be acting more sexually and flirting with male fans in the crowd, even blowing kisses at some. He also stopped in the middle of his match against Ezekiel Jackson to comb his hair."

Now, to say this is surprising is a massive understatement.

Personally, I thought Drew was due to play a fairly large role in the current Teddy Long-Johnny Ace feud—possibly screwing Long out of the Smackdown GM job to kind of end their own mini-feud.

Creative, though, in their infinite wisdom, have seemingly decided to go in a different direction.

It would now appear that the former-Chosen One may be destined to slide into what could be an extremely controversial gimmick change, especially if it were to be based on his sexual orientation as initial reports are suggesting.

Drew may now join the growing WWE "joke club" which currently houses Natalya (shocking fart gimmick), Hornswoggle (how does he still have a job?) and Mick Foley (sorry Mick, you were great in the Attitude Era but you're becoming the next J.R. for embarrassing segments).

With such initial promise from the young Scot, it is actually quite disappointing to see him so underused within the company, particularly when far less talented superstars have been given multiple opportunities seemingly on a whim (Mason Ryan, Big Zeke et al.).

Now, by no means am I saying that this gimmick is irredeemable, as anything can happen in the WWE. But my biggest concern would be for Drew to end up in another Chuck and Billy situation, which would literally kill the career of the talented Brit.

This sort of Creative decision also makes me think twice about the return of big-name stars such as the Rock and Chris Jericho, who could in many ways be blamed for the burial of younger talent, even in what appear to be short-term cash cow roles.

While I realize that not all talent can be pushed, and that character variation within the roster is key to keeping the WWE product as interesting as possible, I think there must be a better and more original turn that the McIntyre character could (and should) progress in.

What do you think?

Will Drew McIntyre be successful in his new gimmick or should he go in another direction?
