2012 NFL Combine: Day 2 Winners and Losers
Once again, it's time to look at the winners and losers from the NFL Scouting Combine. The second day is now behind us and the big name offensive linemen were weighed and measured, while some of the glamour players like Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III and Justin Blackmon arrived.
Here is a look at whose stock is going up, whose is going down and how some current NFL teams and players also fared as news flowed out of Indianapolis.
Winners:
Matt Kalil
USC offensive lineman Matt Kalil is considered by many to be the second-best prospect in the entire 2012 NFL draft class. He finally had his chance to be scrutinized at the Combine on Thursday and his measurements were outstanding.
Kalil measured in at 6'6" and a solid 306 pounds, while his arm length is 34.5 inches. The 306 pounds represents some weight gain by the left tackle prospect since the end of his college career, but it appears to be good, solid weight.
The 22-year-old claims he wants to add more bulk at the next level. The thing about Kalil is how good he is on his feet and how well he moves for a guy his size. Having smart weight on his frame is important, but he shouldn't go crazy with it.
After the measurements portion of the Combine, Kalil has only solidified his status as the draft's top offensive lineman.
Ryan Miller
Colorado offensive lineman Ryan Miller showed up at a massive 6'7" and 321 pounds, which certainly put his name on the map as a guy to watch this week. Miller said all the right things on Thursday, and certainly made an impression.
During his senior season with the Buffaloes, Miller started every game at right guard, but he has the versatility to play all over the line. In fact, he showed an ability to adapt throughout his career, as he played under three different offensive line coaches for three different offensive coordinators.
If Miller can finish well in the rest of his workouts on Friday, he could move himself up into early second-round consideration thanks to his size and versatility.
Losers:
Indianapolis Colts
Not every item that comes out during Combine week relates to prospects, as today Indianapolis Colts general manager Ryan Grigson let some news slip about his team's quarterback situation. Grigson has been on the job for about a month, and apparently hasn't yet decided what to do about Peyton Manning.
The four-time MVP quarterback is due a $28 million bonus on March 8, and the Colts have yet to work out what exactly will happen before then. In addition to that, Grigson said the team hasn't decided if the team will select Andrew Luck with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 draft.
Sure, Grigson could just be posturing, but either way it came across as if he was just flying by the seat of his pants and that there was no real plan in place. That's bad news for the franchise as a whole.
Kevin Kolb
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb had a very tough season in 2011, and now he may not be around to enjoy the desert in 2012. Cardinals general manager Rod Graves wouldn't commit to Kolb as his starting quarterback for next season, dancing around the topic as best he could.
Kolb has a $7 million bonus due on March 17, and head coach Ken Whisenhunt claims the team has not discussed that impending payday internally. Don't think Arizona isn't thinking about Manning as a possibility, as the 11-time Pro Bowler might enjoy playing with wideout Larry Fitzgerald.
The fact that the team won't commit fully to Kolb is a bad sign for the 27-year-old, who just spent his first season in Arizona after a trade from Philadelphia.
