NBA Trade Rumors: Los Angeles Lakers Should Focus Solely on Adding a Point Guard

Eric BowmanFeb 21, 2012

The Los Angeles Lakers are rumored in every which way as the March 15 NBA trade deadline approaches, but the reality of it is that they only need to be serious about deals involving point guards.

On Monday, ESPN's Chris Broussard reported that the Lakers like what they see in Minnesota Timberwolves small forward Michael Beasley.

Broussard stated that it wasn't known to him what the Lakers would give up, but none of that really matters, because that sort of deal isn't going to happen.

Well, if the Lakers are smart, that is. One would like to think a strong NBA powerhouse such as the Lakers wouldn't drastically harm the team with such a move.

No, the Lakers don't need to add any forwards or big men—they're perfectly fine with what they have. The problem, as most already know by now, is that the point guard play has seriously been lacking.

Derek Fisher is aging and is far from what he used to be on the court, and Steve Blake isn't enough to really run the show for Los Angeles.

Sam Amico of FOX Sports tweeted that his sources say the Lakers will kick up their pursuit of Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Ramon Sessions.

In case you missed it ... Lakers likely to "accelerate" pursuit of Cavs' Ramon Sessions over All-Star break, says Western Conference source.

This is a very wise decision. Any deals involving Pau Gasol is not the ideal move the Lakers need to make, unless it somehow brings them one of the top five point guards in the league. Even then, it's still a risky move to part ways with Gasol.

Pursuing Sessions, who is currently averaging 10 points and five assists per game, is their best bet. There is no doubt that his production would increase even more by playing with such elite talent like Kobe Bryant, Gasol and Andrew Bynum.

If the Lakers are going to contend for a title, their roster needs an upgrade at the point position. They are looking at Gilbert Arenas, but according to Broussard's report, the Lakers want to see if they can acquire a different point guard.

Sessions is the guy the Lakers need to go out and get if they're serious about winning another title. Sure, the roster they have now could potentially get there, but that's putting a lot of pressure on Kobe.

By adding Sessions, the Lakers get a better facilitator to help create more opportunities for everyone. The lineup gets an upgrade, and the Lakers will be on to big things in the Western Conference, which is why they have to pull the trigger on a deal for Sessions.

Any other trade that doesn't involve a point guard is going to have a negative impact on the team moving forward, and that is something the Lakers don't need in their quest for a championship.
