WWE News: Triple H "Coaching" R-Truth Behind the Scenes

Imaan JalaliJun 1, 2018

If you watched R-Truth during the Elimination Chamber debate on the Feb. 13 edition of Raw and had no idea what he was blathering about, don't feel embarrassed.

Truth's arbitrary musings about spiders and Flipper the dolphin—complete with voice mimicking—even made his fellow wrestlers, particularly CM Punk, do a double-take.

The truth is that we're supposed to respond with slack-jawed bewilderment, as opposed to an assured understanding, the moment we witness R-Truth speak into a microphone.

In fact, according to The Wrestling Observer Newsletter—via WrestleZone.com—this is all part of the plan to evolve Truth's character for the newest generation of WWE fans. The WWE executive responsible for this course of action is Triple H.

As quoted in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter:

"

"Triple H has been coaching R-Truth to really take his character to the maximum. R-Truth saying more random things and having more promo time has been a result of Triple H pushing him. He wants the character to be more silly comedy than dancing and rapping."

"

While it's reassuring to know that R-Truth has a backstage proponent with undeniable clout in Triple H, it is concerning that Ron Killings is being virtually turned into a comedy act.

Previously, Truth's paranoia and schizophrenia in spurts gave his character an unpredictable edge. Combined with his ability to be equally serious, it was a potent one-two punch for a character who was making ample headway with the audience.

However, the alleged decision to make Truth an all-out dolt for the short-sighted reason of fulfilling Raw's comedic quota risks undermining the former NWA champion's credibility moving forward. For instance, if the function of Truth's character is to not connect with the crowd on account of being an unintelligible schizoid, then viewers will eventually tune out when he's the focus.

Granted, if that were to happen, the fault would lie with Triple H, not R-Truth. All the more perplexing is that "The Game," who is a true student of the business, is well aware of what sells in wrestling. And though whimsical goofiness has its place, it doesn't have nearly the pull that an intensely "real" storyline has.

As the recent in-ring verbal duel with Shawn Michaels on Raw showed, Triple H may be saving the best on-air material for himself while gaining backstage favor under the guise of "coaching" the talent. Suffice it to say, it is a masterful way to dodge any "conflict of interest" accusations aimed at his dual role in the company.

Unfortunately, the potential stars of tomorrow won't be better off for it.
