NBA Trade Rumors: Why David Kahn Should Not Trade Derrick Williams

David Kahn, of the Minnesota Timberwolves, is one person who should be proud of what his team has been doing so far this NBA season. After making questionable moves in the past, things have kind of worked themselves out in Minnesota, and it appears that the future could be quite bright for the young Timberwolves team.

One great decision by Kahn was bringing in veteran head coach Rick Adelman to coach the team, instead of a less experienced head coach.

However, as the trade deadline approaches, there has been some talk recently about the Timberwolves possibly becoming a suitor for Spanish big man Pau Gasol, who currently plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. One reason being that Gasol is close to Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio, and would be another weapon for the crafty guard. Gasol was almost traded to the Houston Rockets before the start of the season. This would have brought Chris Paul to the Lakers, before the trade was vetoed.

If the Timberwolves were to make a successful push for Gasol, they would most likely have to give up rookie Derrick Williams, amongst other assets in a trade package, and that should not happen.

Williams is quite skilled, and could be a future star in the league. Although Williams has been somewhat unhappy with his minutes (they have fluctuated) so far this season, he is too young and full of promise to be dealt right now.

Williams has shown signs of breaking out, with his ability to score in the painted area and his outside shot, which will improve over time. David Kahn did come out saying that the team would not be making a major move at the trade deadline. But as the trade deadline approaches, teams may really start to push for deals, and demands could soften.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are a team that been impressive so far this season, with their youth movement of Ricky Rubio, Michael Beasley, Derrick Williams and Kevin Love, along with the contributions from Nikola Pekovic, who struggled last season to find his place on the team.

Right now it is too early to tell what rumors will actually become trades, since the deadline is less than one month away, and teams around the league are still preparing themselves for All-Star weekend.

However, after the All-Star break, trade talks are expected to rise with the deadline day set for March 15th.
