WWE News: The Rock to Appear at WrestleMania 29, but in What Capacity?

The Doctor Chris MuellerJun 7, 2018

It was announced during the press conference for WrestleMania 29 that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will appear in his third straight WrestleMania next year in New Jersey.

This is good news for some WWE fans, but it is great news for Vince McMahon as Rocky's involvement will almost certainly increase visibility and press coverage of the event.

The big question is what role will he fill in the big event?

He was last year's special guest host for WrestleMania 27, a night some people say he stole the spotlight from deserving roster members by getting involved in a match.

This year he is lacing up his boots again in preparation of putting them to the ass of John Cena, in just his second match since retiring from WWE several years ago.

His last match was at Survivor Series, where he teamed with future opponent Cena to take on Miz and R-Truth. The event had a poor bu rate and instead of blaming the guy who had the most coverage going into the event, they blamed Miz—according to rumors anyway.

The inclusion of The Rock in WrestleMania 29 is really no surprise, as Rocky has re-embraced his wrestling roots in recent years.

After he initially left the WWE, he tried to distance himself from the business by dropping "The Rock" from his title as well as never mentioning wrestling in interviews.

That has all changed, as he is now doing multiple appearances and even wrestling again.

Next year at WrestleMania 29, The Rock should do no less than wrestle again.

If he comes in this year to wrestle and then goes back to being a guest host, it will just be strange.

If he were to wrestle the main question would be: Who would he wrestle? The Undertaker is one possibility, as is his former rival Triple H, but until we know more, anything we say is just speculation.

I personally have mixed feelings about this.

I am a Rock fan, but I feel like since he is no longer a major part of the business that he should not be taking time away from the guys and girls who bust their butts the other 364 days a year.

If they want to bring him in this one time then fine, but if it becomes a yearly thing then he is taking time away from other wrestlers who could be having matches on the biggest night of the year.

What do you think The Rock's role will be next year at WrestleMania 29?
