2012 NFL Mock Draft: Ryan Tannehill and More Prospects Who Are Going to Be Busts

Tim DanielsJun 7, 2018

No matter how much scouting teams do before the NFL draft there are always going to be a couple of massive busts in the first round. It's unavoidable because certain players are unable to successfully make the transition from college for whatever reason.

Since there's no foolproof method to drafting prospects, no team is immune from the bust bug. The teams that are best able to avoid it, however, are the ones you see in the playoffs each and every season.

Here's a full mock draft of the opening round featuring players who won't live up to the hype.

1. Indianapolis Colts (2-14): Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

Luck will be another franchise quarterback for the Colts to build a dynasty around

2. St. Louis Rams (4-12): Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State

Sam Bradford has never been given a dynamic receiver like Blackmon to work with.

3. Minnesota Vikings (3-13): Matt Kalil, OT, USC

Taking an offensive lineman rarely draws rave reviews, but it's a must for Minnesota.

4. Cleveland Browns (2-14): Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor

Griffin will give diehard Browns fans reason to get excited again.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-12): Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama

Richardson needs to hope the Bucs select him or he may suffer a big draft-day slide.

6. Washington Redskins (5-11): Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M

Tannehill is the most debated prospect so far. Some people believe he's got the skills to succeed as a top-10 pick while others think he's better suited in the second round. The Redskins are in desperate need of a fresh face at the QB spot, though, so it wouldn't be surprising to see them take a chance.

The bigger problem for Tannehill would be the sky-high expectations. He's not as ready to contribute right away as Luck or Griffin, but Washington would have to throw him into the fray right away anyway because the team doesn't have another option.

Since the window to succeed for young players is so small, especially for quarterbacks, a poor first season would immediately leave him on the hot seat. That's a lot of pressure to deal with and would ultimately be Tannehill's downfall.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars (5-11): Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU

Clariborne is the best defensive player on the board in 2012.

8. Carolina Panthers* (6-10): Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina

Coples will excel at the next level once he develops a couple more moves.

9. Miami Dolphins* (6-10): Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa

Even though the Dolphins would love to get a QB here, there isn't one worth taking.

10. Buffalo Bills (6-10): Courtney Upshaw, DE/OLB, Alabama

A useless pass rush has plagued the Bills for a decade. Upshaw will finally fix that.

11. Seattle Seahawks* (7-9): Devon Still, DT, Penn State

Seattle's addition of Still would finally fix the team's run stopping problems.

12. Kansas City Chiefs* (7-9): Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford

The last elite offensive lineman lands with the Chiefs, who certainly need him.

13. Arizona Cardinals (8-8): Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama

Kirkpatrick is still a future superstar despite some recent off-field issues.

14. Dallas Cowboys (8-8): Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College

Kuechly is going to trap the Cowboys at this spot. They are in need of an inside linebacker to shore up the defense and he's the best one of the board, but taking him this early is a bit of a reach. Outside of tackle totals, which don't always translate to the NFL, he lacked impact numbers at Boston College.

That's most because Kuechly isn't an elite athlete. While that aspect of his game wasn't exposed in the ACC, it will be at the next level. He isn't going that extra burst necessary to keep up with tight ends or running backs coming out of the backfield.

Don't get me wrong, Kuechly could turn out to be an average linebacker if everything works out perfectly, but he's never going to possess enough skill to be worthy of the 14th pick.

15. Philadelphia Eagles (8-8): Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame

Michael Vick would greatly benefit from a big target like Floyd.

16. New York Jets (8-8): David DeCastro, G, Stanford

It makes sense for the Jets to take DeCastro even though there are other needs.

17. Cincinnati Bengals (via OAK 8-8): Melvin Ingram, DE/OLB, South Carolina

When deciding between Ingram and Nick Perry, the Bengals will lean toward the guy who has a better chance of helping right away.

18. San Diego Chargers (8-8): Nick Perry, DE/OLB, USC

It's about time the Chargers addressed the outside linebacker spot.

19. Chicago Bears (8-8): Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin

Konz will immediately fix Chicago's offensive line problems after a shaky season.

20. Tennessee Titans (9-7): Michael Brockers, DT, LSU

The Titans fell just short of the playoffs this season. Brockers will make sure they get over the hump in 2012.

21. Cincinnati Bengals (9-7): Lamar Miller, RB, Miami

Miller is exactly the type of running back the Bengals need to replace Cedric Benson.

22. Cleveland Browns (via ATL 10-6): Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina

Cleveland needs to provide more weapons for whichever QB is under center next season.

23. Detroit Lions (10-6): Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State

The Ohio State product will be a nice upgrade for the Lions, even if it is enemy territory for the Buckeye.

24. Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4): Cordy Glenn, G, Georgia

Glenn was a big reason for Georgia's offensive success this season, especially as the season wore on.

25. Denver Broncos (8-8): Fletcher Cox, DT, Mississippi State

If Tim Tebow is going to be the Broncos' starting quarterback next season, the team is going to need dominant play from its defense to contend for the playoffs. First and foremost, they need to find a way to stop the run on a consistent basis.

Cox would be the best run-stopper on most draft boards at this point, which would make him an attractive option for Denver. The problem is the last few defensive tackle classes have been so strong that this year's prospects are being overvalued.

It will be difficult for Cox to make an immediate impact because he's still developing. If he were thrust into the starting lineup right away, he'd be handled with ease by interior linemen because he lacks moves, having succeeded with pure athleticism so far.

26. Houston Texans (10-6): Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor

Wright has the speed to be a stud playing opposite of Andre Johnson, who will always draw the coverage.

27. New England Patriots (via NO 13-3): Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska

Dennard truly deserves to be selected before this point, but there just isn't a good fit. The Patriots benefit once again.

28. Green Bay Packers (15-1): Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama

If he can keep his off-field issues under control, Jenkins has the potential to become a shutdown cornerback.

29. Baltimore Ravens (12-4): Vontaze Burfict, LB, Arizona State

The Ravens have to be intrigued by Burfict's ability, even if other teams are scared away by secondary issues like his emotional style.

30. San Francisco 49ers (13-3): Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers

The 49ers surprised a lot of people this season, but the same won't be the case when fall rolls around. Sanu will give them more talent to be prepared for more battles.

31. New England Patriots (13-3): Mark Barron, S, Alabama

Barron would be another savvy Bill Belichick selection with the potential to be a steal.

32. New York Giants (9-7): Dwayne Allen, TE, Clemson

Allen is a pick the Giants don't necessarily need, but can afford to make after winning the Lombardi Trophy.
