Randy Moss: Best Possible NFL Teams for Determined WR

Timothy RappJun 7, 2018

Call it a comeback.

After a brief retirement, Randy Moss has announced his intention to return to the NFL in 2012 and, even at the ripe old age of 35, Moss is almost assured to attract interest from NFL teams.

But which teams? And what organization would be the best fit for Mr. Moss?

Put on your prognosticating boots, people, and let's find Moss the team of his dreams. Or at least the one that will pay him.

Chicago Bears

When I try to imagine where Moss will land, I think of three things: Who needs an upgrade at wide receiver, what team is close enough to being a playoff contender and is willing to take a chance on Moss and which team has a strong enough veteran presence—namely at quarterback—to keep his ego in check?

The Bears fit the mold nicely.

Jay Cutler hasn't had a receiver that could stretch the field and make plays deep since he was paired with Brandon Marshall in Denver. Frankly, he hasn't had many good receivers to work with since.

If the Bears aren't willing to overspend on a receiver and free agency and want to address other needs via the draft, Moss would be the perfect fit for the team, desperate as they are for an upgrade at the wide receiver position.

New Orleans Saints

Hear me out on this one. The Saints have a lot of key pieces set to hit free agency, and the first two priorities should be returning quarterback Drew Brees and guard Carl Nicks.

The problem is that may not leave them without enough money to also return both wide receivers set to hit free agency this year, Marques Colston and Robert Meachem.

If Moss were willing to be a cog in the multi-faceted, spread-the-ball-around machine that is the Saints offense, he could be a cheap and potentially fantastic replacement for either Colston or Meachem (or in a worst case scenario for the Saints, for both).

This one may be a long shot, but I think it's just crazy enough to work.

New England Patriots

Yes, the Patriots. And they may actually be the frontrunners. At the very least, they'll at least have interest, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk:

"

He’ll have to prove that he can still run, just like he did in 2007, when he showed Patriots coach Bill Belichick that he could still move incredibly quickly after two years of not doing much of that in Oakland.  If, and given that he’s 35 it could be a big if, Randy can run, the Patriots could be the most obvious destination.

The Patriots, we’re told, still like him.  As Peter King pointed out in August 2011, Moss made a surprise appearance at the home of owner Robert Kraft in the days after the passing of his wife, Myra.

"

Adding (a cooperative, team-oriented and still spry) Moss to the Patriots passing attack could potentially be devastating. How many defenses could match up with Moss, Wes Welker, Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski?

Not many, if any at all.

Other teams I considered:

New York Jets: He would be a good fit here from a pure football standpoint but I don't think he's the right piece to bring in to a combustible locker room.

Houston Texans: They could use a solid second receiver next to Andre Johnson, but I think they'll address this need in the draft.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: They certainly need a receiver, though I wonder if Moss would even consider the Bucs if he had other suitors.

Baltimore Ravens: I don't see a natural fit here with Anquan Boldin and Torrey Smith already in place, yet the Ravens keep popping into my head as a destination for Moss. Take that for what it's worth.

Philadelphia Eagles: They were rumored to have interest in Moss last offseason and have been linked to the receiver in the past. Depending on what the Eagles do with DeSean Jackson—the team will use the franchise tag on him, though they may do so to trade him—Moss to the Eagles could happen.
