David Ortiz: Red Sox Make Brilliant Move Bringing Back Big Papi on 1-Year Deal
David Ortiz and the Boston Red Sox have avoided salary arbitration with a one-year contract for $14.575 million, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.
The two sides were scheduled to appear in front of a judge this morning to settle their financial differences, but were able to reach an agreement just before the hearing.
Ortiz had been hoping to get a two-year contract from the Red Sox, but it became obvious early in this process that the team wanted to keep him on a one-year deal. They had to pay a little more than they wanted to get their wish, but it will pay off in the end.

What It Means
The biggest thing is that Ortiz and the Red Sox were able to amicably settle their differences. Arbitration always seems like such a rotten deal for both the player and team, because both sides are coming up with reasons why they are worth a certain dollar amount.
Ortiz, along with Adrian Gonzalez, Dustin Pedroia, Jacoby Ellsbury and Kevin Youkilis, will anchor the Red Sox lineup in 2012. The offense led the American League in runs scored, on-base percentage and slugging percentage last season.
Red Sox Nation can breathe easier today knowing that Ortiz is officially under contract as we move closer to the start of spring training.
What Happens Next
Ortiz and the Red Sox will put on happy faces for the cameras during a press conference and they will prepare for their trip to Ft. Myers, Florida next week for spring training.
Despite their front office turnover after last season, the Red Sox will be one of the favorites in the American League East. Retaining Ortiz will enhance their chances to win the division or wild card this year.
If Ortiz has another big year in 2012, he could get that two-year contract he so desperately wanted. He is 36 years old, so his window of opportunity is closing. He only got this contract thanks to his resurgence last season.
