NFL Draft 2012: What Will the St. Louis Rams and Cleveland Browns Do in April?
Obviously, teams that hold the No. 2 and No. 4 overall picks in an NFL draft have the power to dramatically alter what happens beyond their first selections.
But in the 2012 draft, there is so much mystery surrounding the St. Louis Rams No. 2 pick and the Cleveland Browns No. 4 pick that both teams are making it nearly impossible to predict what will unfold in the Top 10.
The Indianapolis Colts are going with Andrew Luck at No. 1 overall. Yes, you'll hear some big media-generated questions about the possibilities of Baylor's Robert Griffin III.
Don't listen.
Luck's going No. 1.
When the Rams go on the clock, what do they do?
In January, I outlined their possibilities and there are plenty of different directions in which they can go. Will they take RG3 and scrap the Sam Bradford project? Not likely. Do they grab USC's stonewall left tackle Matt Kalil to fortify their offensive line? How about Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon to give Bradford a big-time weapon?
What about a trade?
Teams are foaming at the mouth over the possibility of grabbing the Heisman Trophy winner, and may be willing to give compensation the Rams can't resist.
Will the Washington Redskins move up? What about the Miami Dolphins, they need a quarterback. Can't forget about the Seattle Seahawks, either.
Maybe it'll be the Cleveland Browns, the second mysterious team heading into the 2012 NFL draft.
Quarterback Colt McCoy started 13 games in 2011 and threw for a pedestrian 2,733 yards with 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Some think McCoy's time is done in Cleveland, while others think he simply needs more receiving weapons and must be supported.
So what does team president Mike Holmgren do?
He's said he, "loves" McCoy but won't anoint him as a 2012 starter.
Hmmm.
Do they take a shot at Griffin, or maybe bring in a free agent signal-caller like Matt Flynn?
What about drafting Blackmon? He'd certainly bring some explosiveness to the offense. How about Alabama running back Trent Richardson? After a disastrous year with Peyton Hillis, will he be back in a Browns uniform?
However, the future of their franchise could ultimately depend on what St. Louis does with their No. 2 overall choice.
There's so many questions surrounding Cleveland, Ohio's football team, that I'm starting to get a headache.
There's lots of intrigue in St. Louis, Missouri, too.
Right now, it's simply impossible to know what each organization will do, but we should get a better understanding when free agency begins on March 13.
