5 MLB GMs Who Deserve to Have a Movie Made About Them

Ally WilliamsJun 7, 2018

By now we’ve all either seen Moneyball or heard enough about it to get the gist of the movie. What about the rest of the GMs, though?

There are plenty of general managers whose careers have been successful and exciting. Whether retired or still in the game, these are the general managers who deserve to have a movie made about them at some point in the future.

Leave your ideas as to the stories you’d watch in theaters.

Brian Cashman

1 of 5

Brian Cashman could be a movie subject from a couple of angles. There are the six American League pennants and four World Series titles the New York Yankees have won under Cashman’s watch.

There’s also somewhat of a personal side that could be shown for Cashman. There have been conflicts between the GM and Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner. There’s also the alleged stalker that’s been making headlines—trying to extort money regarding an affair.

Michael Hill

2 of 5

I think of this movie as a hypothetical situation. Michael Hill made huge moves this offseason, adding Heath Bell, Jose Reyes and Mark Buehrle to the lineup. The Miami Marlins also have a new name and location.

Depending on how this season goes, Hill could see a movie with a representation of himself in a few years. The great transition from bottom of the standings to a potential playoff run would make a wonderful movie.

Theo Epstein

3 of 5

Theo Epstein was only 28 when he took the role of general manager with the Boston Red Sox. During his time there he helped the team break their 86-year drought, and bring home a World Series title.

His career isn’t even close to being over. He just signed a five-year contract as the President of Baseball Operations for the Chicago Cubs.

This wouldn’t be the first time an Epstein had a big part in an important movie. Theo’s grandfather and great uncle co-wrote the screenplay for Casablanca. Yes, that Casablanca.

Andrew Friedman

4 of 5

An analyst at a big equities company ends up as general manager for a team with a payroll about a fifth the size of division rivals, the New York Yankees. This GM is still here after several years and few have measured up to the job he has done since then.

How does that not sound like a movie?

Wait, maybe in a year or so the Tampa Bay Rays will win the World Series and we’ll definitely be seeing a Hollywood version of Andrew Friedman up there on the silver screen.

Pat Gillick

5 of 5

Pat Gillick’s impact spreads not only across the four teams he was part of, but across the league as a whole. In Gillick’s 27 years as a general manager, he earned three World Series titles and set multiple records.

Gillick is only the fourth GM to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and the first since 1971. His career would certainly make an interesting film.
