2012 NFL Draft: Where the Top 10 Wide Receivers Could Be Drafted

Mike FastJun 7, 2018

In 81 days, former college football stars will experience their dream of becoming an NFL football player.

At this year's draft, there is no suspense about who the first overall pick will be.

Even the thought of the Colts trading the top pick is losing steam.

So what is there to look forward to?

Well, if the quarterback is the most sought-after position in football, the person the quarterback throws to is a close second.

In the last seven Super Bowls, a wide receiver has been named the MVP in three of them.

Is there a future Super Bowl MVP in this current class of wide receivers? Maybe.

For now, here are my top 10 wide receiver prospects and which team may select them in the upcoming NFL draft.

10: Marvin McNutt, Senior, Iowa

1 of 10

Physical Attributes

Height: 6'4"

Weight: 215 pounds

40-yard dash time: 4.54 seconds

2011

Receptions: 82

Yards: 1,315

Average yards per reception: 16.0

Touchdowns: 12

Career

Receptions: 170

Yards: 2,861

Average yards per reception: 16.8

Touchdowns: 28

Potential landing spot: Minnesota Vikings (second round)

Prediction: With the Vikings likely to choose a premier left tackle with their third overall pick, and with Marvin McNutt likely to be on the board in the second round, they could take a look at him.

Drafting a left tackle and wide receiver consecutively after drafting (who you hope to be) your franchise quarterback the year before isn't a bad idea, whatsoever.

9: Ryan Broyles, Senior, Oklahoma

2 of 10

Physical Attributes

Height: 5'10"

Weight: 188 pounds

40-yard dash time: 4.50 seconds

2011

Receptions: 83

Yards: 1,157

Average yards per reception: 13.9

Touchdowns: 10

Career

Receptions: 349

Yards: 4,586

Average yards per reception: 13.1

Touchdowns: 45

Potential landing spot: New York Jets (second round)

Prediction: Santonio Holmes and the Jets are not on good terms, if you didn't know. Ryan Broyles is similar to Holmes in stature, talent and collegiate pedigree.

The only question about Broyles is with regards to his health.

On Nov. 5 against Texas A&M, Broyles tore his left ACL and was ruled out for the rest of the season.

If he can come back and show teams he is the same player as he was before his injury, his stock could go higher.

8: Patrick Edwards, Senior, Houston

3 of 10

Physical Attributes

Height: 5'9"

Weight: 175 pounds

40-yard dash time: 4.45 seconds

2011

Receptions: 89

Yards: 1,752

Average yards per reception: 19.7

Touchdowns: 20

Career

Receptions: 291

Yards: 4,507

Average yards per reception: 15.5

Touchdowns: 43

Potential landing spot: Houston Texans (second round)

Prediction: The Texans have the best offense in football in terms of stretching the field, both vertically with Andre Johnson and horizontally with Arian Foster.

With all of those weapons, adding Patrick Edwards to the mix may not even be fair.

Not to mention, Edwards played his college ball eight miles away from Reliant Stadium.

7: Mohamed Sanu, Junior, Rutgers

4 of 10

Physical Attributes

Height: 6'2"

Weight: 215 pounds

40-yard dash time: 4.67

2011

Receptions: 115

Yards: 1,206

Average yards per reception: 10.5

Touchdowns: 7

Career

Receptions: 210

Yards: 2,263

Average yards per reception: 10.8

Touchdowns: 12

Potential landing spot: San Francisco 49ers

Prediction: The 49ers need a wide receiver, plain and simple.

Vernon Davis is among the best tight ends in the league, and Frank Gore is as consistent as an NFL running back gets.

Mohamed Sanu is projected to be drafted even higher than this, but I think San Francisco will be able to select him, unless they want trade up to pick someone else.

6: Jeff Fuller, Senior, Texas A&M

5 of 10

Physical Attributes

Height: 6'4"

Weight: 220 pounds

40-yard dash time: 4.55 seconds

2011

Receptions: 70

Yards: 828

Average yards per reception: 11.8

Touchdowns: 6

Career

Receptions: 233

Yards: 3,092

Average yards per reception: 13.3

Touchdowns: 34

Potential landing spot: Jacksonville Jaguars (second round)

Prediction: Mike Thomas is the Jaguars best receiver, but he's only 5'8".

Adding Jeff Fuller could really help the Jaguars rebuild their offense. Or, at the very least, take some pressure off Maurice Jones-Drew.

Fuller will probably be selected in the second round, because the Jaguars are more pressed at other positions.

5: Brian Quick, Senior, Appalachian State

6 of 10

Physical Attributes

Height: 6'5"

Weight: 220 pounds

40-yard dash time: 4.55 seconds

2011

Receptions: 71

Yards: 1,096

Average yards per reception: 15.4

Touchdowns: 11

Career

Receptions: 202

Yards: 3,418

Average yards per reception: 16.9

Touchdowns: 31

Potential landing spot: Baltimore Ravens (second round)

Prediction: The Ravens have made it known they are going to address the wide receiver position in this year's draft.

With the emergence of Torrey Smith, Baltimore may be looking for a big, tall receiver like Brian Quick to play alongside Smith for the foreseeable future.

4: Kendall Wright, Senior, Baylor

7 of 10

Physical Attributes

Height: 5'10"

Weight: 190 pounds

40-yard dash time: 4.61 seconds

2011

Receptions: 108

Yards: 1,663

Average yards per reception: 15.4

Touchdowns: 14

Career

Receptions: 302

Yards: 4,004

Average yards per reception: 13.3

Touchdowns: 30

Potential landing spot: Arizona Cardinals (first round)

Prediction: Larry Fitzgerald routinely gets double- and tripled-teamed, and still performs at a Pro Bowl level.

Imagine if the Cardinals drafted a speedster like Kendall Wright to play opposite Fitzgerald.

Along with a healthy Beanie Wells, that trio could help the Cardinals challenge the 49ers for the NFC West title in 2012.

3: Michael Floyd, Senior, Notre Dame

8 of 10

Physical Attributes

Height: 6'3"

Weight: 224 pounds

40-yard dash time: 4.47 seconds

2011

Receptions: 100

Yards: 1,147

Average yards per reception: 11.5

Touchdowns: 9

Career

Receptions: 271

Yards: 3,686

Average yards per reception: 13.6

Touchdowns: 37

Potential landing spot: Chicago Bears (first round)

Prediction: Michael Floyd could be the second receiver drafted in the draft.

He's a solid, all-around receiver (route-running, blocking, ball skills, etc.) that always plays tough.

In other words, he's exactly what the Bears need.

2: Alshon Jeffery, Junior, South Carolina

9 of 10

Physical Attributes

Height: 6'4"

Weight: 229 pounds

40-yard dash time: 4.55 seconds

2011

Receptions: 49

Yards: 762

Average yards per reception: 15.6

Touchdowns: 8

Career

Receptions: 183

Yards: 3,042

Average yards per reception: 16.6

Touchdowns: 23

Potential landing spot: Carolina Panthers (first round)

Prediction: Alshon Jeffery could very well be the first wide receiver drafted in April.

If he's not, he will most certainly be available when the Panthers make their selection.

Along with Carolina's tight ends and running backs, Cam Newton and the speedy Steve Smith, the size of Jeffrey could instantly make the Panthers offense competitive with any offense in the league.

1: Justin Blackmon, Junior, Oklahoma State

10 of 10

Physical Attributes

Height: 6'1"

Weight: 215 pounds

40-yard dash time: 4.55 seconds

2011

Receptions: 122

Yards: 1,522

Average yards per reception: 12.5

Touchdowns: 18

Career

Receptions: 253

Yards: 3,564

Average yards per reception: 14.1

Touchdowns: 40

Potential landing spot: St. Louis Rams (first round)

Prediction: The Rams may be split 50-50 on either taking Justin Blackmon or USC left tackle Matt Kalil.

But when you have a prospect like Blackmon who recorded 233 receptions and 38 touchdowns in two seasons, and you desperately need help for Sam Bradford, it's really tough not to draft that player.

Blackmon also won the Biletnikoff Award (nation's top receiver) in 2010 and 2011.

The only way the Rams don't pick him (or Kalil) is if some team, who also needs a wide receiver, trades up and makes them an offer they can't refuse.
