National Signing Day 2012: Florida State Dominating Recruiting Frenzy

Jun 3, 2018

Florida State didn't need to have a great day on national signing day, as the Seminoles' 2012 recruiting class was already widely recognized as one of the very best in the country.

But just because you have enough doesn't mean you can't have more.

If you've been following along with the NSD circus on ESPNU, you'll know that this has been a huge day for Florida State. Scout.com has the full breakdown of Florida State's NSD haul, which includes three 5-star players and two 3-star players.

Of the bunch, only two have yet to sign: quarterback Jameis Winston and cornerback Ronald Darby. Winston told ESPNU that he's going to hold off on signing for a few more days, and Darby just put on his hat less than an hour ago.

The point is debatable, but Florida State's biggest grab today is Eddie Goldman, a 5-star defensive tackle from Washington, D.C. His commitment was met with cheers in Florida State's war room, and it's easy to see why. Goldman is a beast; his commitment gives the Seminoles a rock-solid group of defensive line prospects.

Included in that group are 5-star defensive end Mario Edwards and 5-star defensive end Chris Casher. Keep in mind that the Seminoles already have a solid defensive line. At the very least, it is getting a heck of a lot deeper.

At best, it is getting three new stars.

Make no mistake, the Seminoles suddenly have an SEC-worthy defensive line. The rest of the ACC should shudder at the very thought.

Behind this defensive line, new recruits Darby and Colin Blake will solidify the secondary, and outside linebacker Reggie Northrup could also become a significant contributor.

Looking at today's action from a big-picture perspective, this is a case of the rich getting richer. The Seminoles already had one of the best defenses in the country, and it's clear now that Jimbo Fisher wants to make sure that this is the case year after year after year.

The saying goes that defense wins championships, and Fisher is holding true to the idea.

It was easy enough to see Florida State winning a national championship within the next few years even before today. But after this last-minute influx of recruits, the Seminoles almost seem like a lock to win a national championship.

If they don't this year, hey, there's always next year. And next year, there will be more recruits.

It's hard to imagine Florida State doing any better than this, but you can't rule it out.
