National Signing Day 2012: Florida State Seminoles and Teams Winning Big

Eric BowmanJun 7, 2018

National signing day has been wild and unpredictable, but there are some teams having a much better day than others.

While programs have been crushing the recruiting trail in the past couple of months, having a strong national signing day can see a team drastically rise in the recruiting rankings.

A lot of elite recruits wait for the spotlight of national signing day, which is the first day recruits can sign national letters of intent.

There are still players that have decisions to make, but for now, it's easy to see that these teams ruled the stage on Feb. 1.

Florida State

The Seminoles started the day of big by getting Mario Edwards to sign. He's the No. 1 defensive end and No. 1 overall player by ESPN, and there were rumblings he was looking elsewhere.

In addition to Edwards, QB Jameis Winston said on ESPNU this morning that he does plan to sign with Florida State on Friday, and if not then he will do so next week.

Perhaps the biggest pickup for Florida State is the No. 1 defensive tackle, Eddie Goldman. He picked the Seminoles over Alabama and Auburn, which is a big win for the ACC.

While they did miss out on Nelson Agholor, the Seminoles did just get Ronald Darby, a 4-star defensive back who is arguably the fastest recruit of 2012.

The Seminoles have put together a phenomenal class, highlighted by a strong national signing day.

Stanford

A week ago, Stanford had one elite recruit in Noor Davis, but the Cardinal landed 4-star offensive tackle Joshua Garnett a few days ago, which was a big pickup.

Things got even better for David Shaw on Wednesday, though, as 5-star offensive Andrus Peat surprised everyone by picking Stanford

Many believed he would join his brother at Nebraska, but he shocked everyone and will play for Stanford. In addition to Peat, Stanford also landed 5-star offensive lineman Kyle Muhphy on signing day. What's more, the Cardinal are also in the running for 5-star defensive end Aziz Shittu.

Stanford has been steadily improving in recruiting in recent years, but all eyes will be on the Cardinal to see how they fare without Andrew Luck.

USC

Another Pac-12 team picking it up big-time is the Trojans, which is proof that Lane Kiffin is a stellar recruiter.

Due to NCAA sanctions, the Trojans are limited to how many recruits they can sign, and all that means is that the guys they get have to be the best of the best.

On Monday, USC picked up offensive tackle Zach Banner, and on Wednesday, the Trojans landed 5-star wide receiver Nelson Agholor and 4-star defensive end Leonard Williams.

It's a small class for the Trojans, but they've done a great job of bringing in quality players to help the future of their program.
